The M2 model has one 256GB NAND flash chip, and the M1 model uses a pair of 128GB chips. Essentially read and write speeds are better on base M1 than base m2 ssd.

Rather get an open box of M1 air at 256/512GB close to 700-900$ instead of this.

the single flash chip storage (on the M2) is not good. save the money and maybe get 16gb or 512GB M1 Air.

Typo. You're right, but you meant that the M1 has 2 128Gb SSDs on board.

I'm holding out on a deal for the M2 8Gb/512Gb but with every passing day those chances seem to get slimmer and slimmer...
I keep my computers for a long time. Currently working on a Late 2012 Mac Mini with 2 1Tb SSD's that still works OK but not very portable. Upgrading to an M2/8/512 seems the right thing to do to future proof myself for the next few years.

You will not notice the difference unless you are moving huge files.

Can I edit 1080p videos on this (toddler home videos not pro)? Is the screen or build quality better on the M2 than the M1?

I think a lot of folks here on SD are so focused on the slower 256 GB SSD speed that they ignore all of the other substantial updates in the M2 version:

Brighter 13.6" screen vs 13.3", much better 1080p webcam (vs terrible 720p in the M1), new better keyboard, MagSafe, and faster CPU/GPU.

Worth it IMO.

$1k for just 256gb come on !!!! 8gb of ram in 2022 almost 2023 this is an insult for customers even for apple customers, (i am apple customer) for this price at least 512gb storage will be Ok but the ideal should be 16gb and 512gb

Yes, I am a tech teacher who teaches a video production class. We have a lab of the m1 airs using Final Cut. Runs like a dream. However, With this size storage just understand that video takes up a lot of storage, especially the higher quality 4k that some phones can do now.
