Thanks for the HU. We have a cruise booked with final payment toward the end of the month. Got this on DWs card but neither of mine.

Beats the 4% I'd get from Costco travel.

Speaking of which the final payments are already scheduled - anyone know what happens if I login to the RC site and just pay the $1k on AE - is the system smart enough to just charge the open balance at the time? We have 3 rooms booked so in total it's a pretty hefty amount.

Who did you book through? If you booked direct with Royal Caribbean, you can make a payment online, and it will work. If you booked through a TA (which you really should to get extra perks), you have to make the payment through them. And if you booked with Costco Travel, I don't think that you can pay with an AMEX card. However, you can call Royal Caribbean and purchase $1000 of onboard credit (OBC) and it will work fine. And you can get it refunded at the end of the cruise if you don't spend it. Just don't send the credit back to your AMEX card, or they will likely claw back the points. I always give them a debit card when expecting a refund of excess refundable OBC at the end of the cruise, or you can cash out at Guest Services the last night.

Costco travel, for the sole purpose of getting 5% (2% executive and 3% CC, which I forgot is 3% for travel). BUT I did notice that on the CC statement it lists royal Caribbean just like if I booked direct, which is odd.

I created profiles on RC for each of the rooms, so when I get a chance I'll try paying one of them at RC direct

so if I buy a bunch of PVC and don't use it they refund it to anything I like, not just the original form of payment?

Good to know they let you refund back debit. CCL allow that too? BTW Good to see you post again MrB!

1 day I would like to go on a cruise, never have been on one. What is the cheapest amount one would pay for a cruise? And are all the cruise ship brands good or are there some to avoid?

If you've never been on a cruise, start with a shorter one (3-4 nights). That way you won't be stuck on a ship if you're having a bad time. Most large cruise lines are OK, and your personal circumstances could also dictate which one would be more appropriate. For example, if you go on Carnival during typical spring break time, you may encounter more young people, whereas some Virgin cruises are adults-only. Princess tends to cater to a more senior crowd.

To keep it simple, you should probably look at what's available at your nearest port, during a time when you are willing to travel. Keep in mind that when you search for cruises, you will usually see the price listed for inside cabin (no window or balcony) for double occupancy. Taxes and fees will usually be extra.

It only seems to be on cards that get Membership Rewards points this time around. There was a $250/1000 offer a few months ago.

I would think that Carnival would allow it. Holland does, and they're owned by CCL. In general, you can get the remaining cash the last night of the cruise at Guest Services if you prefer.

And thanks.

Cruise payments always show up as the provider rather than the travel agency. Airlines, too. You really don't want your charge going to the TA and then relying on them to make the payment. That's a red flag.

And yes, unused refundable OBC (on board credit) will be refunded to the card you gave when you completed check-in.

You wont be able to make a payment at RC if the TA holds the reservation.

Costco's website says that they do not take AMEX. Also, you can do better than 5% back, although I assume they're also giving you a cash card. Crucon gives 10% in refundable OBC.

Yes took my 1st Holland AK cruise. Life changing very diff than Carnival "party" boat

Only had $12 OBC left over due to AK water tax refund. So no big loss, but will try your debit refund trick in the future.

Thanks OP. Great timing.
Had it on my Amex everyday card but not on my blue cash everyday. Wife did not have it on 2 of her Amex cards. We've added multiple offers on remaining 3 cards hoping it will eventually pop up before our payment due date late next week.

Great info on this thread, good to know I can pay travel agent and get Amex offer credit.

Anyone knows if I redeem points on Royal Caribbean's Visa for onboard credit and I don't get to use it, could I get it refunded at the end of the cruise?

I want to apply for CC (current offer spend $1k earn 250k points for $250 onboard credit) but seems like I can't use onboard credit for daily gratuities that I think will be charged at the end of the cruise.
I already purchased 2 beverage packages (who knows if price will come down so I can cancel and rebuy in the next couple of months) so I'm unsure I will get to use credit.

TIA

Not all cruise lines let you refund your onboard credit. Best to check their policy.

I do remember one work around was to use the OBC to load into the electronic poker table, and then cash out from there. Depends on the cruise lines though.

I haven't been on a cruise in awhile, but I'd think that would all be electronic now.
