I missed some of the great 65" in sub $400 deals during Prime day and Black Friday, mainly because I was doing so much research into the difference in models brands and Technologies sort of like a paralysis by analysis. What I come to realize is I'm truly not going to be happy until I get a 65" to 75" OLED or equal technology TV, but not willing to pay $1200+, so this TV at that price should hold me over for a few years until the price of my preferred TVs gets below $600 during black Friday.

I've been super impressed by Hisense Dolby HDR or whatever they call it paired with an Apple TV 4k. I bought my son the midrange one from Costco last fall, and was so impressed I bought the fancy model from the previous year on sale for myself. Bonkers value-for-the-money on both that made me forget about my lust for an OLED.

I would pay this much for a good 40ish inch. Why don't these exist?

They do. Typically 43" or so. Plenty of sets in this price range or lower at the size you mention.

My bedroom Panny plasma just went kaput (six blinking red leds of death.) My wife and I primarily watch SDTV reruns of comedies like Friends and Seinfeld before dozing and plasma was perfect—how is HiSense with upscaling older content??

More expensive TVs generally have better upscaling and processing. Sony is very good for example. But honestly if you are watching older shows like Friends and Seinfeld, they arent' going to have amazing picture quality no matter what, so practically speaking I think the Hisense would be fine.

One other thing to consider is viewing angles. Plasma has very wide viewing angles. Most LCD TVs use VA panels and do not have great viewing angles. If you need wider viewing angles you can look for one that uses an IPS panel, but the tradeoff of IPS is that the contrast is not as good, but should be fine for casual viewing such as in a bedroom.

OLED is the only current technology that can deliver both wide viewing angles and amazing contrast, but the tradeoff is that they are expensive. Probably not worth the cost for a bedroom TV.

Just got the 50" version of the same TV and compared it side by side with TCL 4-Series Roku TV. Put a 4K nature video clip from YT

Unexpectedly, TCL 4-series turned out to be much better than this Hisense. So, it is going back

Does the 58" one have identical panel?

Can all the Hisense owners chime in please? I am on the fence and wonder how reliable this Chinese brand is. Many negative reviews. Then again, this price is really a deal. Anyone find anything better please share. Thanks
I own the cheaper 58" r6 model that sells for $298. I like it, it replaced a 12 year old Sony hdtv and it works well so far. My only gripe is I can't use the app with it or I can't get it to work, so I can't fine tune the settings to calibrate it

I haven't seen it in my short time looking. Typically these premium sets stop at the 55" range or so.

I was reading about an app required to color calibrate the Hisense TVs (separate from the Fine Tune Picture menu), is this across the board for their roku versions?

For example LG makes a 42" OLED C2 evo 4K UHD [bestbuy.com]

Edit: this is a great deal also 48" LG A2 Series OLED 4K UHD [bestbuy.com]

It depends on the model, I think 60" and up is fine, its like the 58 is an off size which shouldn't be related but my mental' "noted" makes me think that

Thanks, bought one to replace my failing Samsung KS8500. It actually seems to compare pretty well at Rtings, and the price is no contest ($380 58" vs 55" $970 in 2016).

my power supply failed completely, so I changed it out, got the TV back but the brightness fluctuates up and down on some sort of cycle, so I went into the service menu and turned off brightness changes, and ran some diagnostics; anyway the entire screen color turned green shifted and I had to notch it out with the color settings but it just looks awful now. too bad, 6 years is not that impressive for a near flagship TV.

I have a 2 year old
Hisense - 50" Class U6G Series Quantum ULED 4K UHD Smart Android TV

and I can't figure out how to just dim the entire screen when I don't want it so bright. I'm using a google for chromecast TV dongle and like it better than the built in android. Anyway, the TV is fine for me. I didn't have a space for anything larger in the room.
