I'm an avid iTunes user, and currently own these movies- when I click on the bundle, it shows "HD", and when I click to view details on any of the movies, it shows "HD" and then quickly flips to "4k" with the different variations.
If you are a first timer to iTunes or now what is becoming AppleTv, Apple has always had the stance that you either buy movies in the lowest quality or the highest- there is no middle ground except for Disney movies (which this is not), and one other studio I believe… So HD and UHD (4k) is viewed as high quality in Apple's eyes, and they will give you access to the highest quality they have even if you only paid for HD (as long as their contract with the studio allows it, and you purchased through Apple). All the movies I bought through Apple (with few exceptions noted above) as HD have been automatically upgraded to UHD.

If your only issue with what I said is that you think Apple Pays to upgrade you, you are mistaken - logically they would be able to do that with all studios, including Disney which is not the case. Disney's whole movie model is based on selling the same movie over and over again with slightly better features each time. Apple negotiated with the studios in their contracts to allow the automatic upgrade. My guess is because this also allows them to only store the higher res version and SD vs needing to also store HD.

Apple has never touted they "pay" for you to upgrade- here is the clipped version of the keynote where they announced it. Look at minute mark 2:30.

Somewhat correct.

In this case you are buying an HD movie bundle.

Apple paid the studio to upgrade it to 4K for you.

Because Apple and Disney could not finalize a price.

It is very well known that Apple paid the studios for this. The idea that studios allow this without getting paid is laughable.

Huh? Apple sells Disney movies in 4K, and if you bought a Disney title in iTunes (or redeemed a Disney code directly into iTunes), then your movie is upgraded to 4K where applicable.

Disney is no different from any other major studio, in this regard.

Yes they sell 4k, however I was talking about if you purchased an HD version prior to the 4k being available, you did NOT get a free upgrade like the other studios- Disney was the carveout that if you bought Hd you only got Hd and could purchase the 4k upgrade instead of upgrading for free.

The topic changed into Disney, Apple paying for 4K. The question is: is this a good deal?

please don't change the topic again! Yes, good deal if you only plan on watching it on Apple. You could hold out on a disc deal (it's gone down to 40ish) but you'd have to pick a stream-tailer for the digital copy and be stuck on one anyways since it's Paramount and not MA.
So, keeping on track-- Disney/Apple -- interesting stuff, I'd like a source on that as well but I want it spoon-fed to me please.

I dunno what you're talking about. All my iTunes-purchased Disney titles are upgraded from HD to 4K. There was a short window (years ago) where Disney was dragging their feet on upgrades.

iTunes bundles always show HD even if all the included titles are 4K. You'll still get 4K if you buy the bundle (assuming the title is available in 4K on iTunes).
