If you are a first timer to iTunes or now what is becoming AppleTv, Apple has always had the stance that you either buy movies in the lowest quality or the highest- there is no middle ground except for Disney movies (which this is not), and one other studio I believe… So HD and UHD (4k) is viewed as high quality in Apple's eyes, and they will give you access to the highest quality they have even if you only paid for HD (as long as their contract with the studio allows it, and you purchased through Apple). All the movies I bought through Apple (with few exceptions noted above) as HD have been automatically upgraded to UHD.
Apple has never touted they "pay" for you to upgrade- here is the clipped version of the keynote where they announced it. Look at minute mark 2:30.

In this case you are buying an HD movie bundle.
Apple paid the studio to upgrade it to 4K for you.

It is very well known that Apple paid the studios for this. The idea that studios allow this without getting paid is laughable.
Disney is no different from any other major studio, in this regard.

So, keeping on track-- Disney/Apple -- interesting stuff, I'd like a source on that as well but I want it spoon-fed to me please.
