funny- I searched SSD on slickdeals because I just identified this SSD as the culprit for chronic crashes after 2 years of ownership so now looking for another. I wouldnt recommend this for $10, but I may just be being a sour-puss.
The primary function of DRAM on an SSD is to store a map of where the data blocks are stored. Without DRAM, an SSD controller will use a portion of the NAND capacity that is set aside for the same purpose. NAND is much slower than DRAM, so although this process works, it is not ideal, particularly for high random I/O workloads.
Adding a DRAM module and additional circuitry to maintain data integrity during a power loss adds cost, complexity, and consumes more power. Enter Host Memory Buffer (HMB). SSD's that utilize the NVMe protocol use the PCIe bus, which gives them a fast pathway to other resources like system memory. HMB allows the SSD controller to use a small amount of system memory to perform this function. Having the DRAM module as part of the controller package can still be more performant than HMB, but not significantly enough to experience the difference except comparing synthetic benchmarks that are not representative of real-world scenarios, in most cases.
Working in the industry I can tell you the push to increase efficiencies of cost to manufacture, and especially power consumption, has never been higher. I would not be surprised to see an increase in NVMe SSD's that utilize HMB, particularly as system memory and PCIe performance and bandwidth continue to evolve.

DRAMless - HMB
