Wow. Sad to see everyone hating on this game. It really is well done. Maybe a few of these negative commenters should share details on why it's a bad game from first-hand experience...they probably can't. I've played it on PS5, so I can't speak for the Switch version specifically, but here's what I can say:
There are so many fine details in design, graphics, building tracks/rooms, and gameplay. When I first heard about this game I just rolled my eyes and thought it was a kids/free game. But after hands-on for several hours I literally said to myself "I can't believe this isn't a $60/70 title." They really took their time and paid attention to details such as making every car's underside (and all other details) true to the original Hot Wheels car. Not true to the real-life car, but true to the one that came from the package. Who does that for a detail you might see a couple of times for 1-2 seconds when you crash?
If you ever played with Hot Wheels as a kid, seriously, give this a chance. I'm 33 and never thought I'd even consider playing a Hot Wheels game after the age of 12, but it really does a great job of bringing that nostalgia and experience you had as a kid to life. And yes, there are microtransactions, but they are not predatory or mandatory in any way. You can easily bypass 100% of them. I despise MTXs, but considering the amount of effort that went into the game and it wasn't a $60/70 title, I'm fine with them making a little off the whales if they want to be foolish with their money.
And I know...IGN will give literally almost anything a 7 or 8. But they decided a 9 was in order. Even on Steam it has an 81% score all-time and 90% recently. Here's the link to IGN's review. Bottom line: try it!

It was okay for maybe 2 hours then I never touched it again. Way too grindy and either super easy once you unlock a good car or super hard time trials regardless of car. I can't imagine a kid not getting frustrated with this game.

Many people have stated why it was a bad experience. Your experience as a 33 year old gamer is different than that of a 10 year old kid. For many parents who buy this game for their young child, it will be a bad experience because the difficulty level is too high meaning the 10 year old gets frustrated and only plays the first few levels.
For those who downvote, feel free to comment. I was responding to the request from the commenter above who said people who didn't like the game couldn't say why. I explained why with a very valid explanation. SD feeling more like Reddit everyday.
I downloaded this from PS+ and this game took me completely by surprise. Very good quality and polish, tight controls, and good music.
There's one hell of a difficulty curve though, and even on medium difficulty sometimes I win by a lap and other times I'm left in the dust. If you're having a hard time the difficulty can be turned down at any time through the menu. The problem is on easy, it becomes too easy. They did not balance it well, but you'll beat the race, unlock faster cars and develop your skills all the same.
I can see it being frustrating for kids, but I went in expecting a kids game and got more than I bargained for too, it got addicting pretty quick.

What does that mean? It doesn't work with the steering wheel?
But is it worth $12.50, that's the question here.
Also for $18 you get the full game of the year edition on PlayStation which definitely would be the better deal.
