Great product but a little too late as this has been out for 6+ years. I know as I had it at launch and about to replace it soon as I get a good price.

Cheers,

can you use the original as a satellite too? The satellites are going for $300 so this is a great deal if you need one

Original? Do you mean the Router? It cannot be used as a satellite to my knowledge.

I have the router, 2 satellites and the outdoor satellite. Great coverage for Wifi 5...

As long as it's Gen 1, there is a method to convert the router to a satellite.

Solid router. Just flash with Voxel firmware. Served me well during pandemic WFH and still works fine.
Eventually will upgrade, but works for now.

Download official firmware 2.1.4.16 from Netgear to PC for both RBR50 and RBS50. The following steps may work even for the latest official firmware but I prefer the older firmwares because they are much smaller files.
Connect PC to RBR50 LAN port. Disconnect PC from all other networks to avoid IP conflicts, confusion and accidental flashing of other hardware.
Go to http://192.168.1.1 and go through initial config if needed, skipping internet and other setups since it is not connected to internet.
Use normal web interface to flash the RBR50 to 2.1.4.16 and wait for reboot.
Factory reset RBR50 (just in case, may not be needed).
When reconnected, go to http://192.168.1.1/debug.htm, login using default admin / password, and enable telnet.
Telnet to 192.168.1.1 using same admin / password credentials.
Execute the following commands:

cd /sbin

artmtd -r board_data (likely will be 1101 or 1201)

artmtd -r board_model_id (should be RBR50)

artmtd -w board_data 1102 (or use 1202 if step 2 showed 1201)

artmtd -w board_model_id RBS50

Power off the RBR50 and then while holding reset button, power back on. Continue to hold reset button for about 30 seconds until power light begins flashing. The router should be in recovery mode.

To prepare for satellite firmware upload, configure the PC IP address as static:

IP address = 192.168.1.2

Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0

Default gateway = 192.168.1.1

DNS = leave blank

Copy the RBS50 firmware downloaded in step 1 to a Windows folder (e.g. C:\Users[your user folder]) and rename it to "1.img" to keep it simple.

Open a Windows command prompt (cmd), and CD to the above user folder

Execute: tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put 1.img

After a minute or two, the file should be uploaded.

The Orbi will reboot and since it is now a satellite, its IP address will be 192.168.1.250. This might take 5-10 minutes.

Go to http://192.168.1.250 and login with admin / password. The original RBR50 should now be a RBS50 satellite.

Use the satellite web interface to flash to any current firmware. Several have reported better success upgrading in smaller steps like V2.1.4.16, then V2.2.1.212, then V2.5.2.4 etc.

NEEDS to be V1

You will brick it if it's V2
