I recently got my dog off commercial dog food and started making my own fresh food for him.
A lot of pretty nasty stuff going into animal feed. I stopped getting milk bone marrow snacks after seeing tons of hair and fur sticking out of them. They consider this meat byproduct, but I don't see how this could be good for our dogs.
If anyone's curious read "Big Kibble" for a more eye opening look on the industry.

Do you use raw meat or cooked?
How does the cost compare to relatively expensive kibbles?

I cook all of the food.
I started off with justfoodfordogs which has kitchens in Petco and actually stand-alone locations in NYC. They provide recipes on their website. I stopped using them after getting a few batches with huge clumps of rice that didn't seem mixed well. They charge about $35 for a 5 lb bag.
If I make it myself, it probably costs about $10 for the same amount. I use chicken leg quarters and pull off the meat after roasting them. Hearts and gizzards are pretty cheap too. After cooking the meat, I chop it in a food processor for mixing with the rice later.
A 5 lb bag lasts maybe about a week and a half. My 21 lb dog is supposed to eat only 9 oz at a time, but he seems to want more of it.
It's not that expensive to cook it yourself, but it's time consuming and you'll need freezer space to store the food since you would want to make larger batches at one time.
