The biggest problems with these language learning apps is the people that skulk around and shame you from using them because it's not going to make you fluent in a language. Yes, you're not going to learn Spanish perfectly without resources outside an app, but it really helps getting started and remaining on the course to learning an additional language.

I have a 5+ year streak going and can tell you without a doubt I know multitudes more Spanish now than I did when I started. Would I have learned more Spanish in those 5+ years if I took classes? Absolutely, but I took Spanish in school for 13 years and barely learned anything. It's all what you make of it

Incidentally, I renewed mine today for $59. Also, I completed 1,000 day streak today!. I started with the free version. It limited how much I can learn. I then switched over to the paid version and it has been worth it. I speak a good Spanish now (I am 65y old) and understand 90+%. I am going to Mexico City in 2 weeks so that I can use my skills and learn more Spanish too. Please remember that paying $59 doesn't make you fluent in Spanish. It is the time you spend learning and this app makes that possible. $5 a month is worth it. There are also free podcasts to learn conversational Spanish, but very limited.

Any idea how to get this promotion as a current subscriber? My sub ends Jan 10, feels bad to be penalized for not having my subscription expire at the 'right time'.

My 6 year old tried Super but we found that it doesnt do much to enhance the learning experience. The only two benefits i found are unlimited hearts and reviewing errors, but not really necessary. Am i missing something?

I am learning Portuguese as well. I am on a 598 day streak. Started free for a year or two. Upgraded to the unlimited lives before I went to Portugal last March. I think the unlimited lives and the extras cited by the other posters have made a huge difference. I took the language in college 30 years ago, listened to tons of Pimsleur lessons - but this has done more to help me remember words and understand the structure of the language. The only thing better would be an actual immersive classroom course, which I plan to take after I likely move to Portugal in a year or two.

That said, for those interested in Portuguese, it only teaches Brazilian Portuguese, which has a different feel and uses some different words than European Portuguese. I am continuing it because that's what I started doing many years ago and I don't want to confuse my brain. I know UTalk and some other apps let you select what variation of the language you want to learn.

I used Rocket Languages, Babbel and Duolingo. Both RL and Babbel are superior to Duolingo IMO, RL being the best. And you pay it once, it's not subscription model. Here is a review: https://youtu.be/J95QIVa07IU

FYI seems like subscriptions are priced geographically. I'm out of the country for NYE and just grabbed the annual duolingo super for a sale price of 700 MXN or about $35 USD.

A VPN probably does the trick too.

I'm almost a year into learning a new language, and the free Duolingo has been a daily part of it. I did a trial once, but didn't end up paying for the premium version. In my studies I found the free web version is the best way to use Duolingo, the mobile app the most convenient, and not to use it as a primary learning resource. But, I doubt many would regret this discounted price even if it only helped to establish a daily learning habit.

Overall my biggest takeaway from the past year of learning is to just get started. Everyone thinks they have or know the best method/book/service for learning a language in the most efficient manner, but the most important thing you can do is get started and make learning a daily habit. Duolingo is pretty good at doing that, imo. You'll find what does and doesn't work along the way and adjust accordingly. You might drop some resources, struggle in areas you didn't expect to, neglect areas you shouldn't have, and maybe even realize in frustration you've learned incorrect information that now needs to be re-learned, but through it all you will be learning and making progress.

Tried to see if this was the family plan, or if it could be upgraded after purchasing the $60 version. It was not the family plan, and the "upgrade" was just still "pay full price for family plan" on top of the $60 already paid. Do not recommend.

There are ads on duolingo? My mom has been using the web based version for half a year, doesn't seem to have any issues.

On the subject of Drops, I was still able to do the discount deal for the lifetime plan using the link on my PC at https://languagedrops.com/holiday-offer

Then you have to make an account. Then you can choose premium and apply SARAH50 or the other coupon.
