Here is what I think are the pluses and minuses of each:
BowFlex
Faster to adjust for minor adjustments (5 or 2.5 lbs)
Higher max weight in basic set (52.5 vs 50)
Shape is more traditional
Easier to hold for 2 handed exercises
More traditional design
Less noise
Setting weight is mostly idiot proof... they aren't going to fall off
Powerblock
Physically smaller when lifting less weights (Bowflex/NordicTrack you have a giant frame no matter what you do. My wife refused to use them)
Expandable to 70 or 90 lbs
Less fragile
Ultimately I chose the PBs because 52.5lb max wasn't cutting it anymore, but the more traditional Nordic/BowFlex design is probably better for most people.
For dudes who just want to get into decent shape, 55 is plenty. Very few dudes can curl 55. Shoulder pressing 55 is more than most guys can do. And heck, not that many non-gym going guys are going to be able to dumbbell press 55.
But yeah if you want to get into GREAT shape or build a lot of muscle... then you will outgrow 55. BUT on the other hand I think most people like that though (who want to get into great shape/build a lot of muscle) will have a gym membership anyways.

I like these.
They are fairly well balanced, though not 100% like a normal dumbbell.
The mechanism to change the weights is also a little inconvenient as you need to make 4 adjustments every time, but I haven't had any real issues with it.
The grip is metal and feels pretty high quality.

Yes Powerblocks is better. These max out at 55lbs. Extra pounds can be added to Powerblocks all the way to 90lb. These most likely have the same "Please don't drop" warning as the Bowflex Selecttech. I've heard of people having Powerblocks and still going strong while taking a beating. Some people also hate that these always stay the same length at all weight settings while the Powerblock starts out small than gets longer as you add more weight.
