This game is great, but please know the switch version has awful performance.

For under $20, this it's not bad, but more than $20 is pushing it for this game. You can finish the main story in less than a single game year, probably even a single season if you really want. It doesn't gate things like RF4S did. The overall amount of content seems lower than RF4S and of course on the Switch the performance is a bit janky. It's certainly playable, but you'll see it dip below 30fps pretty routinely. The PC version doesn't have the same performance issues, but still has the other issues like lack of content. You probably also want the PC version for mod support, so you can do things like disable the cicada sound during the summer season, which sounds like a really badly done loop.

I learned about Rune Factory from the podcast Into the Aether, and there's some interesting discussion about whether Rune Factory 4 Special or 5 is the better introduction to the series for newbies:

I hear Steam is the way to go because of that.

Rune Factory 4 was great so it's kind of a shame that they not only went the 3d route, but also botched the Switch performance, which hurt their reviews. Hopefully that doesn't prevent a Rune Factory 6!

It's pretty fun regardless. I haven't had any problems with performance tbh. If you liked past iterations it's a no brainer at this cost

People hated the gating in 4. They can't win. I've put dozens of hours in and never got close to finishing the story. Maybe stop playing it like an RPG and more like a life sim.

Time gating is one thing, but the random gating to activate a ton of stuff is what really frustrated me.

The game is worth getting at this price point. Enjoying it now after picking it up the second time. I play docked and performance issues haven't been bad.

Played RF4 and loved it!!!...so got this one on release on the Switch.


And it is absolutely terrible. Poor performance, dead empty world, not much to do, controls are janky and it's terrible to farm or do combat. Would not buy it again even for this lower price.

Instead get RF4, much better.
