Currently member of both Costco and Sam's. I prefer Sam's plus over Costco executive. Scan & Go, Free curbside pickup, Same price In club and online, Free shipping, more affordable and premium quality product availability and more. Costco might be paying well to their employees but hey, you also need to think about customers and be flexible.

I'll agree with everything you said except the premium quality part. Sams Club is anything but premium. Unless you consider the junk food section premium then you are right. They have every type of chips/twinkies/ding dongs imaginable.

One of the biggest factors contributing to the cult-like Costco following, is their lifetime returns policy for most everyday items, with few exceptions. Compared to that, Sam's offers only 1 year returns window.

Costco store brand products also tend to be better quality in comparison.

Sam's leaves Costco in the dust when it comes to products selection and variety. Costco often will have a grand total of 2 options for some products, i.e. 1 store brand and 1 mainstream brand.

I also have both memberships and rarely go to Costco. Scan&Go might change my mind if Costco's dinosaur IT folks ever implement that.
Costco is still doing well so there are no incentives for them to change. Their stock performance is good and their stores are always like a zoo so... Sam club has a scan and go in their app but yet I still see people wait in line for check out.

This policy brings all those people who really USE it for a year+ and return things which don't have any issues. Every good customer pays for these purchase & returned items.

Does your location scan receipts and 3 items at exit to prevent theft? My location does this and it's super annoying. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes just to get out of the store after checking out because the lines are so long. Just wondering if every Sam's does this.
Yes, but at both Sams and Costco. Sams checks receipts and products with scanner which randomly tells the staff to keep checking until a green light.

It is much faster than Costco trying to quickly count all the items in the cart and looking at the receipt to see if anything is missing.

I have both. In fact, I only had Sams until they closed the local club. Now, the closest one is half an hour away. I'm the type of going into the club to buy milk, bread and bananas once or twice a week.

Eventually I got a Costco membership mostly because of the cash back on travel (cruises mostly) which more than pay for the executive membership. So can continue going in/out for milk, bread and bananas.

I pushed the Sams membership after I got it extended for a couple of years after they closed the local one. Then jumped on a couple of better-than-free memberships and the last one was plus. In the last year, I only made up to cover the difference with plus, but consider extending the membership for another year, unless I find a free or better than free promo like the last few years.

Love scan and go and the ability to know the in store prices with the app (which 99% of the time are the same as online for shipping) - in fact, I compare prices when at Costco. They are usually higher at Costco unless they're on sale. But if Sams puts the item on sale, they win. This is for brand name products.

(....Tip for criminals..... )
No idea why Sam's waste time checking ID for curbside. If I can manage to hack somebody's App to place an order and check in, I can also add myself as a pick up person.
.......or just go in and do Scan n Go, which they don't even bother checking if the membership belongs to you.
(... actually criminals can just walk out a full shopping cart and they can't stop you anyways...)

same with Home Depot curbside....
The purpose of checking IDs at curbside is to verify that you are authorized to pick up a prepaid order.

Sams really doesn't check memberships - when you pay, you need to supply a valid one. So even if you are using someone else's, you are still paying for the items. In fact, I see a lot of people at terminals and very few usage of scan-n-go. I always wondered why, but the main reason is the sharing of the membership with others. All you need is to scan the barcode of "a valid membership" - after that, you just pay.

Costco on the other hand is like the Gestapo. Attempt to go in without a valid membership or use someone else's and you'll be sent to Siberia for life.

They claim they make the bulk of profits from membership fees. I think Sams doesn't care about that it seems, and instead only cares about selling.

That said, Sams associates are treated like crap, compared with Costco.

A concrete example of product quality between the two: Costco's Artichoke dip is loaded with big chunks vs. Sam's where there's barely any and just full of spinach.

But we do find things at Sam's that Costco doesn't have and there's always much less people than Costco.

I think I'd prefer the smaller chunks, I like artichoke dip, but not crazy about huge chunks of artichoke.

I bought a $1700 Ghost bed mattress and adjustable bed from Costco 3 years ago or more. I used it for about 2 months and then found an amazing deal on a Tempurpedic direct from Tempurpedic. I moved the Ghost Bed into my guest bedroom where it sat for 3 years. My membership expired a year ago and i never renewed.

About 4 months ago my guest bedroom now needs to be a nursery and I have no need for the ghost bed. I thought about selling it for a couple hundred dollars on FB Marketplace just to get it out of my house (not many people buy used mattresses rightfully so). Then I looked it up and saw Costco has a 100% satisfactory guarantee. I simply renewed my membership, requested a refund within seconds of renewing. They not only refunded me my entire $1700 plus tax but they sent a third party dumpster company to pickup the mattress for me so i didn't even have to move it. A++++ Customer Service.

Well let me add more details to this, there was hardly any artichoke at all. Obviously spinach is less expensive so they put more of that and almost no artichoke. So why even get an artichoke and spinach dip, you should get spinach and "some" artichoke dip

They certainly scan more than items. Almost 80% of items will be covered
It's a percentage of items + high shrink / high theft items
