Deal Details
Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.
  • Refer to the forum thread for additional deal discussion.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

How does the $7500 tax credit work? Do you need to have paid $7500 in taxes to qualify?

Does anyone know if you can buy the car now and add Full Self-Driving Capability package later on?
Yes you can add it as a $15k one time payment through website, app, or in car. You can also opt for the $200/mo subscription

Typical, you look at headlines and not the details. "Problematic" issues are stuff like door jams misalignment. My car had that, I called Tesla service and a guy drove to my house and adjusted the bolts holding the door to the vehicle. Yeah, they should fix this stuff at the factory with better QC, but you're kidding yourself if you consider this anywhere near the levels of issues you'd get with the likes of FORD or Hyundai with actual defects in powertrain that cost billions to recall and repair.
Typical Musk-bro, so easily butthurt. Postgres.

On a 3, you can get anywhere from 200-300 wh per mile, lets average it do 250 since that divides by 1 kwh easily. So 4 miles per kwh. National avg for power in the US is 14 cents.

200k miles / 4 = 50,000 kwh * .14 = $7,000.

200k at 30 mpg and $3/gallon would be $20,000 for comparison.

My old car did about 20 mpg, at current rates I save close to $2000 a year on fuel. But I also save a lot on zero maintenance. Battery failure is a possibility, but it has 8 year / 120k warranty on that and its an edge case.

The NCA cells are rated for 1500 charge cycles, which is close to 500,000 miles. At that point they should have lost around 20% capacity, but still be usable.
Haaaaa you aren't getting anywhere that Wh per mile except very warm 1 season states.

Borrowed an upcoming BIG3 EV SUV when it was 15*F outside. Got 1 mile per kWH. It cost me $1 per kWh at local charger.

What if I rent in California and have to use a Supercharger once a week? Renters get screwed. Did you know that California is about a 50/50 split renters vs homeowners?

You need to owe at least that amount at the end of the year. You will get refund of you paid it already. But if you federal taxes are less than 7500, you won't get the whole amount

Honestly, changed my mind of ever buying Tesla after getting to know who Musk really was. Maybe after he is ousted from the company I'll give it a thought again.

If can't judge by moral standards when you are dropping $60k, when then?

That said, this is just personal opinion.
Am curious if anyone driving a toyota, nissan, bmw, volvo (any non Tesla brand) ever researches their CEOs and then makes a car-buying decision :-)

With the $7500 Tesla credit (from Dec) and the $7500 tax credit (if you are eligible) almost canceling each other, what you are really losing is close to the net price drop, which is approximately $12k, assuming you got a model Y.
Realized I was sleepy and did my Math wrong. Yup, original post had the math right.

Let us say that my son who has an income of 15K buys the car (using the money gifted to him over the years in his bank account). His tax liability will be minimal, perhaps a few hundred dollars. In this case, would he receive a tax refund of 7500 (minus his tax liability)?

These vehicles are ugly and the drivers of them are just about as bad as Prius drivers! Sticking with a gas vehicle for as long as I can!
