Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

Nope. It is a non refundable tax credit so if you overpaid you will get nothing at all.
This is the question everyone asks. When people set up the W4…which a withheld tax or prepay tax. You will get your prepay tax back. The credit of 7500$ will hit first.

You are right but this is what I meant in a simpler way. For a majority of people asking, the term overpaid means they are getting a tax refund. Which automatically discounts them from getting a credit. I'm just trying to say in simple terms so folks can do their research.
let's say you owe the IRS $2500, then you don't have to pay $2500 but won't get the full $7500 credit? You only get $2500 credit?

Insurance on my Model Y LR is approximately $1150 a year. That's on 300k/100K Full coverage with $500 deductible. Plus I have Umbrella insurance on top of that coverage for additional $300 a year. All with Geico.
That's actually not that cheap. Although certainly cheaper than other Tesla owners I have seen. Even a Bmw 3 series is only about $700 a year with similar coverage assuming driver has a good driving history.

Is there a reason people wouldn't prefer Ioniq 5 / EV 6 at this point? Besides Tesla's charging network?

Tesla cars seem dated at this point (exterior design). and the brand carries a ton of baggage.
Big markups.

That is correct. You will need to adjust your W4 to pay less enough that you will owe at least 7500 next year…and then offset that with this credit.
what if i over-paid tax for 2023, will i get refund when filing tax or i lost out on $7500

3 series and a electric car are not comparable. Go back to sleep.

why does everyone assume they'll get the full $7500? battery component part of the ira has yet to be determined. currently the battery materials composition is not >=50% sourced in the US. so it's safer to assume you'll be getting $3750 instead

Do Tesla stick to the delivery estimate? It say Jan to March 2023. Will they be able to deliver before March 2023?
If you sit around and wait then it will not. The worst case is you'll lose the non refundable $250 ordering fees and not pick up the car.

Any thoughts on options for people like us? SHould we trade this back in and buy a new tesla? Is it worth trying?
No you're going to lose more on trading then rebuying. Just consider it as a lesson learned and think twice before buying from Tesla again.

No, I'm the guy who still has some Tesla stock, and has watched Musk with his antics, help run it down of late, but nice try. Musk should lay off the tweets and conspiracy stuff, and focus on running Tesla. He's turning off more of his customer base than he is gaining. It's not like some rolling coal guy loving his tweets, is gonna say hey, now I've got to have an EV Tesla go green, lol.

Dealers! I can't for the life of me find one in California that isn't adding anywhere between $5-10k on top of the cars price. And that's not even including the "ordering fee" some dealerships require before even getting the privilege to purchase a car.

I do agree with your other points, and sadly that won't matter to some. Good luck with your increased connectivity subs coming soon to your new "cheaper" Tesla!

Not sure why there is $6000 and $15000 for advanced autopilot. Can the car drive itself if pay without these options?
