Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.
  • Refer to the forum thread for additional deal discussion.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

Yes, it uses brake fluid. And yes, it needs to be changed every 3 years. Caliper pins need to be lubed every 1-2 years in road salt areas due to (ironically) lack of mechanical brake use. Both easy to do when you're rotating tires.
Never had to do any of this driving an EV in New England for years.

Haaaaa you aren't getting anywhere that Wh per mile except very warm 1 season states.

Borrowed an upcoming BIG3 EV SUV when it was 15*F outside. Got 1 mile per kWH. It cost me $1 per kWh at local charger.
My lifetime average on my 3 is 270 wh, and I travel mostly highway. I'm in FL.

You're not very bright if you're paying $1/kwh.

What if I rent in California and have to use a Supercharger once a week? Renters get screwed. Did you know that California is about a 50/50 split renters vs homeowners?
I wouldn't recommend any EV if you don't have L2 charging at home. It's impractical.

Just because the brakes "work", it doesn't mean they don't need servicing. Hope you never find out the hard way. Don't take my word for it. Take Tesla's.

Here's what I've learned about EV after having it almost a year (Kia EV6).
- it is great for using driving around town like work & school as long as it's within your range
- you must invest in home charger (level 2 at least), it's pointless if you have EV not having this at home
- if you do charge at the station, charging to 80% will be anywhere from 10-20 minutes but the last 20% will be an additional 20 mins at least. This is due to prevent battery explosion I guess so going from 80%-100% is not ideal when you at the station unless you like to sit in the vehicle and do nothing. This is why you need home charging if you need to take it to 100%
- road trip: need well plan and remember, you can start with 100% but most of the time you actually only have 80% unless you willing to sit and wait to get the last 20% (20 mins) to fill it up. So the minimum you be spending at the station would be like 20 mins. Unlike ICE, you can just pump and procrastinate as you have many stations but EV, you need to follow your plan.
- EV is not like ICE, it uses more battery when you are on the freeway, the faster you drive, the more power it consumes. The estimated range of the battery is mostly driving cities without running AC/heater/ect.. Any accessories consume battery power.

Personally, I wouldn't take EV for a long road trip. Overall, this is a great deal if you are in the market for it.

Tesla has that boring interior & exterior. True price of model Y = 30K. You are paying 20K extra for "gas" saving before hand.

I'm working on getting that tax credit on my wife's Volvo now. I'd get an EV for driving back and forth to work, but not as my only vehicle. A PHEV is the best of both worlds. My wife plugs her vehicle in every night and rarely uses gasoline.
Nah - then you're lugging around a big, heavy engine for no reason. Plus you have to maintain that thing! Full EV, preferably one with a solid supercharging network. (ie, Tesla)

Historical prices of Tesla cars - https://prnt.sc/DO-ziF_GkEbj

I've owned a Model 3 since early 2019. It's the best driving experience in the world, hands down. Four years, 0 maintenance. No oil changes, nothing. Just test-drive one, and you will see.

Yes, it doesn't have all the buttons and knobs of most cars. But it replaces that with amazing software. The fact that it has "sentry mode" which records anything that happens to your car when you're away. The fact that you can LIVE STREAM the car's cameras real-time from your phone. The fact that you can have a "dog mode" and leave your pet in there safely. So, so, so many small amazing things.

Tesla cars can do this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfucQM07tGQ (and you can download lightshows for any song from a community of hundreds of creators).

The fact that Tesla cars are THE safest mass-produced cars ever bult in the history of mankind. https://www.tesla.com/blog/model-...sted-nhtsa (a lot of this is due to the architecture of an electric car with its low center of gravity and extra crumple zones). Recent story of how Tesla fell off a 250 foot cliff and everyone survived - https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/03/us...index.html

Seriously. Just test drive one.
If you're bearish on these cars, you're flat out wrong. Thinking back on my 2 porsche's, beemers, audis, BRZ, gti's, parent's mercs is laughable. All so far behind in the tech and overall experience.

And? It just says take a look, doesn't mean it needs to be replaced. Sounds like you never drive an EV before. Give it a try. You might change your mind.

Yeah, super boring. I took a few friends for a drive downtown, they were screaming... may want to hold off on the opinion sharing until you've driven one.

VERY BAD IDEA to buy it now.
Tesla stock will tank further from now. Their prices will be minus 10K from now before tax credit.

If you are curious about experiences owning a Tesla, I've been documenting it on Youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/U...jAveEgraYw

My first Tesla was a 2020 Model Long Range. Then my wife got a 2021 Model Y Long Range 7-seater. She traded that in for a 2022 Model X Long Range and now I have a 2022 Model Y Performance.

In short, if you're not buying an EV to save money, then you will be disappointed. But you can check out my videos. Service center experiences, trip costs, etc.

Thank you for your time.
