Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

Anyone know if in 2022 you file married jointly and were under the 300k income but for 2023 you will be filing single and are over the 150k income threshold can you still use the 2022 AGI?

Did you miss the supply chain issues & raw material cost inflation the last 2.5 years?
Not to mention Tesla constantly refining their production techniques to push production costs down.

Truth be known, what they charge now is still more than what they were happy with margin wise back pre- pandemic.

So passing along savings to customer can still co-exist with demand softening & margins for investors esp. if their costs have gone down & margins are still best in industry.

At some point everyone can have a Tesla if they can afford one.
Tesla is making that a reality for many.
Can't say that about any other EV vendor.

And we're nowhere near peak EV ownership for you to think demand is slackening
Tesla pricing to match their forecasted demand is exactly what legacy ICE vendors have been unable to do so far.
And if people were buying Tesla during the pandemic like they needed it, Tesla wasn't going to perpetuate a bubble scenario by keeping prices artificially high when their costs are reduced due to reasons above.

So how about you do less dreaming of being Fed Chair & learn about what an amazing story Tesla is in real life.
Supply Chain disruption was buch of horse-shit which corporates Fed to public. After 1st year of Pandemic every sector figured out a way to increase production. But all of them kept increasing their prices with hope Pandemic bubble will continue atleast extend till 2024.. it bursted 3 years early..haha now they are caught with 1.5+ years of inventory...haha tesla is no exception they were able to get their China factory up and running during the Pandemic..how? willy wonka sent his oompa loompas to source materials?.. narrative is what you fall for 🤣

I'm still at about 93% range or also of my original at 7+ years, 125K miles. People make such a big deal about the battery when it's such a nothingburger at the end of the day. Free supercharging is nice though considering how much the network has expanded the last few years

My bad it's 91%... just filled it up to 100% for a trip. 245 miles. Original was 270. It was closer to 250 last year when i did that.

doesn't Google say low 90% long term?

honestly the free Internet and supercharger access still makes it an amazing car for me. we use it for road trips out of the suburbs with free fuel along the way

Not sure that's correct. Believe you have to owe at least $7500 in taxes to get that full $7500 credit. So if you only owed $5000 in federal taxes, you'd only get $5000 back out of the $7500. At least, that's how I've always understood this to work historically.
No, I got the tax credit last year. I paid tens of thousands in federal income tax, but my refund during filing was $1k, so the EV credit gave me a refund of $8500

According to the IRS:
"MSRP is the retail price of the automobile suggested by the manufacturer, including options, accessories and trim but excluding destination fees. It isn't necessarily the price you pay."

At a base of $52,990 and an IRS limit of $55,000, you can only get $2,009 worth of options.

Caveat emptor about what exactly qualifies as an option or accessory.

The agi limit says you can use the current year agi or prior year whichever is less. My question is around if use prior year I would qualify from an income threshold, but my new year filing status is different so how does that impact the 7500

your explanation is wrong. this is your situation.

your withheld (pre-pay tax) from your paychecks was 10k. you owed 9k in federal tax. so your return in tax was 8.5k because the government used your 7.5k credit first....then returned 8.5k from your 10k withheld money.

You don't need to change anything in ICE car during the course of warranty other than oil comparing to Tesla. That's $400 for a normal car, and $2000 for Porsche (unless DIY which brings it back to $400).

What tesla fanbois don't like to admit is that tesla's maintenance schedule is pretty much the same as any ICE car other than oil change.
ICE additional costs
Air Filter every 10K
AWD fluid every 30K
Trans Fluid every 60K
Radiator flush 5 yr
Plugs and coils 100K
Fuel filter 60K
Premium gas
Accessory belt 60K
Timing Belt 75 K
Emissions tests
Exhaust repairs in the Rust Belt
No stolen Catalytic Converters

Peace of mind.....
No dirty fuel
No blown headgasket
No overheating
No cooling/trans leaks
No bad starter
No camshaft/timing issues
No rod knock
No Costco long gas lines

Uh, my bad then.

If purchasing now, you should be able to adjust against your 2022 taxes right? 2023 taxes will be filed and adjusted against next year.
