Deal Details
Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

I guess IRS bowed to GM where they classified Cadillac as car instead of SUV. Tesla Model Y is reclassified as SUV thus $80,000 cap
Some people on the thread will miss the importance of this. You can now get the Model Ys in inventory that are slightly above 55k and still get the tax credit. 5 seat Model Y limit is now $80k.

Yep. Someone snagged one for ~56k near me (gray with 20" wheels). Kind bummed, but will feel better if my now MYP gets a delivery date soon.

Guessing we may start to see more LR pop up with many ordering the P now that it qualifies.

Change ur Zip Code to something 200 miles away from you on the Search... but be careful, I see text on the order page where it says the car can only be registered in certain States... not exactly sure of the logic, but it's stated there.
"can only be registered in certain States... not exactly sure of the logic, but it's stated there" to allocate item for residents only of said state.

Separate. This change clears up the classification of SUVs which were confusing.
Treasury will still post updated guidance in March. That update could change things or not.
Mostly agreed. But I do find it odd that the IRS mostly, if not entirely, scrubbed the splash page's content [irs.gov] pertaining to the battery manufacturing requirements as well as the plan to release the updated guidance in March 2023. So those who are unaware of the IRA and its nuances may unknowingly purchase a Tesla Model 3 or Y based on modified AGI and vehicle eligibilities then not end up getting the full credit. There's a small part of me that thinks dealhunt_101 may be onto something that Tesla may increase prices again (since Elon admitted that they bumped it up a bit since the initial price cut due to overwhelming demand) and the timing of the IRS proposed guidance is getting murkier. Especially when Manchin is trying to make noise and the IRS is continues to be severely undermanned. Regardless, taking delivery of the vehicle before March 2023 still remains the safest option.

This point forward, I'm not responding to supernoman. This is more so for everyone's information:

The IRS has a FAQ [irs.gov] dedicated to "new, previously-owned and qualified commercial clean vehicle credits" under the IRA. If you refer to Topic C, Q4, that's where the mineral and battery requirements verbiage is mentioned along with the plan to update guidance come March 2023.

Q4. Do the new critical mineral and battery components requirements apply? (added December 29, 2022)
A4. Not yet. The critical mineral and battery component requirements under § 30D(e) will apply for vehicles placed in service after proposed guidance on these requirements is issued. The publication of these FAQs is not the issuance of proposed guidance with respect to the critical mineral and battery component requirements under § 30D(e) and does not trigger the applicability of those requirements. The Treasury Department and the IRS will explicitly identify when they have issued proposed guidance with respect to the critical mineral and battery component requirements under § 30D(e). However, vehicles ordered or purchased prior to but placed in service after Treasury and the IRS issue this proposed guidance will be subject to the critical mineral and battery component requirements. This proposed guidance is expected to be issued in March 2023.

And for those curious about the details behind the mineral and battery requirements, electrek has a great breakdown [electrek.co]. It was also updated today (Friday, February 3) to reflect that all Model Y configurations under $80,000 are now eligible. Just scroll down until you hit this part of the article: "In order to get the full tax credit, the EV must be assembled in North America and…"

Sorry for the long post, everyone. I'm sure tidbits of what I typed have already been mentioned in this thread many times over but I hope it helps some of the newer lot who are jumping into the pool. Smilie

As of Feb 3, IRS the Treasury Department just fixed the EV tax credit's Tesla Model Y problem and the cap is $80k for ALL models now, no need to add the $4000 option to add 3rd row seats!

GM had Cadillac Lyriq started coming out which started all this reclassification as different government websites were not in line with IRS classification.
