Who Qualifies
You may qualify for a credit up to $7,500 under Internal Revenue Code Section 30D if you buy a new, qualified plug-in EV or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCV). The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 changed the rules for this credit for vehicles purchased from 2023 to 2032.
The credit is available to individuals and their businesses.
To qualify, you must:
Buy it for your own use, not for resale
Use it primarily in the U.S.
In addition, your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) may not exceed:
$300,000 for married couples filing jointly
$225,000 for heads of households
$150,000 for all other filers
You can use your modified AGI from the year you take delivery of the vehicle or the year before, whichever is less. If your modified AGI is below the threshold in 1 of the two years, you can claim the credit.
The credit is nonrefundable, so you can't get back more on the credit than you owe in taxes. You can't apply any excess credit to future tax years.

The sale qualifies only if:
You buy the vehicle new
The seller reports required information to you at the time of sale and to the IRS.
Sellers are required to report your name and taxpayer identification number to the IRS for you to be eligible to claim the credit.
The new law requires the POS (Dealer or manufacturer) to report a bunch of information on the buyer to the IRS.
Such as:
Seller/Dealer name and taxpayer ID number
Buyer's name and taxpayer ID number
Maximum credit allowable under IRC 30D for new vehicles or IRC 25E for previously owned vehicles
Vehicle identification number (VIN), unless the vehicle is not assigned one
Battery capacity
Date of sale
Sale price
For new vehicles, verification that the buyer is the original user

Vehicle manufacturers must apply for Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) eligibility with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and meet a number of program requirements. If all program requirements are met, the vehicle is added to the list of eligible vehicles on our website. At this time, Tesla has not applied.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.
The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.
And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.
The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.
Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.
Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.
"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.
He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.
Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

Nobody can answer that question because Treasury is not issuing their sourcing guidance until sometime (no specific date given) in March.
You will LIKELY be eligible for at least $3750 of it, you MIGHT be eligible for the other $3750 of it (reasonably likely since all Ys use batteries and packs made in the US, though some minerals come from elsewhere) but again nobody can say for sure until the guidance comes out.

it's almost like all car makers have minor quality problems even ones that've been making cars for 100+ years or something.
as noted in most of those threads for other brands (and ones about similar problems from Tesla) this is among the easier things for a service center to adjust (or even an owner if you're mildly handy and don't want to bother with service).
Yeah, ideally EVERY example of a mass produced thing would come out identical and perfect- but that just ain't so in the real world... for any brand.
My Lexus had more physical defects than my Tesla did out of the factory. (NOT suggesting that's typical, but the idea everyone else makes perfect cars is a fantasy)

Say if the tax credit rules changes and eligibility becomes difficult, then demand can go down and many will not show interest to buy because there is no rebate, then there may be price drop. if the rebate extends then you are still way ahead of others and you can get MY in early Q2.

The dead pedal was snapped off when I picked it up brand new special ordered from factory and there was a scratch in the paint near the drivers door handle.
Also it was missing the illuminated door sills the sport package at the time said it came with when I ordered.
Also the ML stereo system option I had didn't actually play DVD-A like the option in the order book said it could.
So pretty far from perfection really.
The dead pedal they easily fixed... though it snapped off AGAIN a couple years into ownership (and dealer repaired with a new part under warranty... did not break a third time at least despite keeping the car a fair bit of time after)
The scratch they touched up but after 2 different attempts the best they got was if you looked close you could tell it was there so all they could offer was give me my next 2 scheduled service visits for free- that one was the biggest disappointment I guess in the end?
The missing door sills they did the best job on- they sent a tech to my workplace instead of making me come back in yet again and he swapped the correct sills on in the parking lot.
The stereo thing I had to escalate to Lexus corporate... Turns out that was a corporate mistake too... the order book lists ML stereo with Nav, and ML stereo without nav. Both list DVD-A in the features. Only the "with nav" one actually played DVD-A though and I had special ordered the without-nav version (because the nav kinda sucked anyway and was several thousand dollars more to get it). Corporate finally made that "right" in a sense... they refunded the full cost of the ML option to me... so I still ended up with the better stereo system, just without the ability to play DVD-A... and they updated their order book to correctly reflect the difference for future buyers. Probably a net win I guess?
The Tesla though? There was a tiny bit of overspray on the front windshield... they only delivered it with 1 keycard not 2...and...
That's it. Car was otherwise perfect. Service cleaned up the windshield same day as delivery for me, and they sent someone to my work to hand-deliver a spare keycard a couple days later.
DURING ownership.... the Lexus had multiple recalls that required physically bringing the car into Lexus each time. Plus twice a year scheduled maintenance.
The Tesla has had one physical recall- and they sent someone to my house to do it. And has required -zero- scheduled maintenance in 4+ years of ownership other than changing the cabin air filter every couple years.
I'm not saying this is how it is for everyone with a Lexus or a Tesla. But the idea legacy auto never makes mistakes just ain't so.
What other credit union has low rates without having to jump through hoops to apply?
