Google is offering Google Stadia Users: Stadia Controller Update to Unlock Bluetooth Mode in Stadia Controllers for Free.

  • Note, click "Switch to Bluetooth Mode" to begin the Update
About this Update:
  • Switching to Bluetooth mode downloads a software update
  • System requirements: Chrome 108 or newer
  • Once you switch your controller to Bluetooth mode, you can't change it back to use Wi-Fi on Stadia. You can still play wired with USB in Bluetooth mode.
  • You can switch to Bluetooth mode, check the controller mode, and check for Bluetooth updates until Dec 31, 2023.
F.A.Qs:
  • How do I pair my controller using Bluetooth?
    • After switching your controller into Bluetooth mode, press and hold the "Y + Stadia" buttons for 2 seconds to enter pairing mode. The status light will flash orange.
    • Then, go to the device you want to play on and pair your controller in the settings. Once paired and connected, the status light on the controller will turn solid white.

I did last year, without BT it wasn't worth keeping just for Stadia. Plus I could use a regular Xbox controller with Stadia just fine. I don't understand or haven't learned why BT was not enabled from the start

Stadia is sadly shutting down tonight. That said, as a parting gift, Google is providing a way to enable the excellent Stadia controller to be used as a standard BT device. You have until 12/31/2023 to do this before controller is only usable via USB.

Except the controllers were refunded so they're technically free and now usable. I was honestly not expecting anything from an essentially free item.

I haven't done the update yet, because I know it wont work on my current desktop machine, because my bluetooth dongle is old and you need a newer bluetooth spec for this to work. It needs the Bluetooth low power mode I believe.​

Connecting with a cable still works even after you enable BT. The only thing you lose is connecting to Stadia over WiFi.

AFAIK Wifi mode only ever worked with Stadia and that is shutting down EOD today. The only reason to leave it in Wifi mode would be hoping someone else would figure out how to support it on something else and it somehow ends up being better than the BT mode. The Headphone jack doesn't work in BT mode so maybe someone could get that working over Wifi mode but BT mode should be more compatible and just work with most things.

bought 4 of these at my nearest goodwill for $5 each. been using them wired to play on steam, but now can use them as bluetooth, that's sick.

This is a great move by Google. I was hoping they would do this but didn't really expect it. This will save so much hardware from being rendered useless.
