Not sure it's nationwide or just here in Sams Club SoCal. Their drink is also bigger than Costco.

Nahh, they're loss leaders like bananas or their $5 rotisserie chicken. Grocery stores lose money on bananas and bread/milk, but you need to go in every week for bananas and they make money off you on other higher margin stuff.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_leader
On top of loss leader, store brands are cheaper on purpose. "This may seem like taking a big loss, but retailers do this all the time voluntarily to retain customers or grow market share on particular categories. Why do you think their store brand products are 30-50% cheaper that name brands? The retailer is not only getting lower costs, but they are investing in price in order to foster consumer loyalty and repeat purchases. Retail price is totally arbitrary."

You can say you're going to the pharmacy, which doesn't require membership. Their food cafe terminals don't require you to scan a card so you can go straight there. They don't follow you...

I have memberships to Costco, Sam's Club and BJ's. My take:

Costco HAD a fantastic food court, pre-COVID, that offered a wonderful selection of items. Deluxe pizza slices and Whole Pizzas - had them - now gone. Polish Sausages or hot dogs with a pop/soda for $1.50 - now the Polish Sausage is gone. Onion and Sauerkraut for your dog have disappeared. There was a beef brisket sandwich - nope - gone. They had a Mocha or Latte freeze for $1.50 - now it's a higher end organic farm raised free-range cage free cold brew for $MORE. Not to mention that they gave Coke the boot and brought in Pepsi a couple of years before that. And... paper straws. Ugh.

Sam's Club on the other hand still has pizza with lots of different toppings. They have larger cups and a greater variety of drink flavors (though I've seen that dwindle a bit lately). But, because of labor shortages and management at Sam's not prioritizing the food court, it's often closed when I go to Sam's, so, yeah.

BJ's - we don't talk about BJ's food court. That's not a thing.
I agree with the "prioritizing the food court" part. Even when they are open, it's like 1 person handling the entire court and it takes forever to get your turn, especially if there's some big order ahead of you. Oftentimes that person doing the food court probably hates their job and works like the DMV lol.

But you wait 10x as long at Sam's. I usually can eat my hot dog and be half way home in the same time I would wait to order at Sam's.

Why cancel. I have both. Locally they are across the street from each other. But scan and go make me never go to Costco. Life changing feature.
I was just kidding. I don't have a Sam's nearby anyways so wouldn't sign up.

I have both. Sam's is awesome due to order pick ups (save a TON of time and money), free generic prescriptions on a lot of medicines, free shipping, and more consistent layout of the warehouse. I hate that Costco keeps changing the location of stuff, which they probably do so that I browse through their whole store. Very time consuming.
I am a big fan of the Sam's self checkout app where you avoid the checkout and go straight to the exit. It is so good, but the Walmart app totally sucks. Wish they could get this fixed.

I had one the other day. It was more like a sausage than a hot dog.

I choose Sam's over Costco though because they refuse to build a Costco where half the metro area lives and is separated by a toll bridge.

....They both don't carry diet coke, so it's equally negative on that front IMO.
By you maybe, here in Mid-Atlantic, around Philly, Costco has diet Pepsi.

Sams is very meh. Their food court is never staffed at the location near us and when it is, it's very slow. The best thing about Sams is the "Scan and Go" which involves no customer service

It feels like this thread only has a membership for the food court.

Interesting comments made in this thread.
If you read the list of ingredients and the nutritional label, you wouldn't eat hot dogs at either place nor feed it to your kids. Heck, you shouldn't feed these things even to a stray starving dog.

Sam's hot dogs are more of a sausage to me. Ever since they got rid of Nathan's and substituted to there hot dogs. Costco 1000% better.
