Yes, these are cheap, but they're also 3-4 years old. Figure batteries may not be in top condition. And CPUs are several generations old; fine for standard business work but don't expect these to be the best for gaming or video creation/editing.

Likely these are off-lease business laptops. Not TC'ing, just know what you're getting into.

How on earth is an $800 Macbook a relevant alternative to a $300 refurbished Windows laptop?

I also don't understand the 'outdated' concept. An 8th gen i7 will do literally any task that 99.9999999% of computer users do today and for the next 5 years. And 32GB of RAM is a ridiculous amount for even a brand-new laptop. What are people doing with their computers that the above isn't enough? My only concern with this refurbished machine would be battery life.

That's some sound logic right there. True words of wisdom.

Instead of buying a 2 year old used car for $12k you should instead buy a $36k new car because it's better.

Bought one last year as a cheap school laptop that I could just toss in my backpack and it has worked very reliably. The one I got was 16gb of RAM, but it did come with a touchscreen. It was in very good condition, even cracked it open to inspect the internals and they had cleaned them out nicely.

I purchased one of these about 4 months ago as a cheap college laptop that I could just carry in my backpack and it has been very reliable. The body and interior were clean, and the only sign of wear was a scratch on the bottom of chassis. The one I got has 2x8gb ram sticks, so half the memory. Only thing I added was a spare battey. The one that came inside still gave me about 6.5 hours of runtime, good enough for a day of taking notes or working on projects.

Yeah the processor is several generations old, but it can handle web browsing, videos, any kind of office software, and some light multitasking. Mine also had a touchscreen, which it was not supposed to lol.

they mostly $600, frontpage has it new for $800

you can always sell it for a good amount

also like 10x battery life over dell crap, better screen, many times better performance
That's not even close to the price of this laptop. Not on anyway comparable. For $600 you could get a pretty good PC on par or better with a used MacBook of the same price. Be realistic.

we just got one of these refurbished Dells this week (different model): Clean as a whistle. it looks brand new and we bought it in Condition A, as it was the same price as condition B. the battery seems like it is new too as well as the charger and cables.

eventually i may open it up to see what all is going on, i suspect new everything. the only thing old was the SSD that had 750 hours on it; that got me wondering, but an IT man told me they probably put various parts together to make the thing. better than expected is my feeling about this Dell laptop.

so i don't understand how some replies are dissatisfied while others are ecstatic over their purchase. that probably puts some off from taking a chance on these things.

I got one of those on sale a couple of weeks ago or so. Battery wasn't in great shape (I ran the terminal command suggested on that thread to find out). I emailed their customer service with my service tag number etc, and two days later they replied that a replacement battery had been ordered for me. Today I got another email with the tracking code. So, yes, if the battery is not in great shape (less than 80% capacity, according to their terms and conditions) they'll send you a replacement for free. I'm very happy with how things turned out: laptop was in great shape (probably just used at home during Covid, being that it was first sold in 2019), and now I get a new battery too. All of this for $210 + tax!

I got two refurbs recently. One grade A Inspiron that turned out to be better than I expected. I didn't notice anything to complain about. And then I got a grade A Precision laptop. That cosmetically appeared to be good too, but it slightly smells like cigarettes from the exhaust. I tried to clean the insides with some rubbing alcohol where I could, but I think it still smells. Dell gave me a partial refund though for this issue. Hopefully I can get the smell out.

That dell is just way too outdated

You can't go wrong buying a M1/M2 macbook unless you hate MacOS

Yes anything above $300 think twice and get m1 at $800. Tried few intel windows laptops and settled for m1 air and it performs on par with 32Gb i7 12th gen and that too without any fan noise. Build quality and everything is great in m1 and performance is way better than intels. If you need for gaming then , yes go for pc with graphic cards.

Probably Sata? I'm reading the 8th gen intel chips were equipped with Sata SSD.
My 7390s came with nvme ssds. One was 100% & the other was 92%. Unfortunately they both had issues so I had to return them. Not sure about this model

No shat. Double the price better get double the performance. That's like saying "don't get a Toyota, get a Tesla instead".

I have ordered two laptops from dellrefurbished over the the last two years, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that for both machines, new batteries had been installed with 0 recharge cycles and 100% capacity. But I bought "A" condition machines. So I think in some cases, the actual refurbishment also includes new batteries. I've also purchased a couple of the OptiPlex Micro form factor machines, which are great when looking for something small. For one of the machines, I checked the SSD when it came in and noticed that it had already accumulated a batch of bad sectors. So I called in, and a few days later, I had another one at my doorstep completely free of charge.

Yeah, in many cases, these are off lease business machines, and yeah, they might be several years old and not at the cutting edge of technology. But they are certainly powerful enought for most basic tasks, and if the get dropped on the floor or knocked around, it's much less of a stress vs. an $800 Apple machine.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the Latitude series is pretty much for business-class machines (whereas the Inspiron series is more consumer-oriented). So the Latitudes are generally built more robustly, and also have thing like built-in Ethernet ports that have been removed from consumer-class machines to save a few bucks. Yeah, a built-in Ethernet port might not be of interest to most people, but it is really helpful for certain operations like setting up a router... And wired Ethernet is still also way faster than most wireless systems for file transfers (to local machines).

Anyway, depending on your intended purpose (and the size of your wallet), these dellrefurbished machines can be pretty good deals.

That's good to know. Given the choice between one of these Latitudes and a new machine of the same price, I'll take the Latitude every time, even if I have to clean it and reinstall Windows. I've owned several Latitudes over the years and the construction quality is excellent; much better than their consumer line. XPS line is probably similar.

I'm using a different Dell Latitude (refurb 8th gen Intel i7, 32 Gb RAM) as a Plex server using USB hard drives. It works great, easy to manage, and survives any power blips because it has a battery. Since Plex is not taxing, I use it during the day for misc. tasks as a jump box/remote desktop platform when I'm away from the house, to download content for Plex, and as a home backup machine (to the USB-connected drives).

I used to have a home NAS or server configured w/a UPS, but this takes the headache out of replacing UPS batteries and configuring the shutdown process if/when I lose power.

Latitude with the Intel 8th gen series will probably go down in history as one of the best refurb laptops ever made.
