Thought maybe this was made of silnylon but no, it's regular ripstop. Hard to believe this ever sold for $179.

Took me a moment to get it. That is quality humor there.

My friend, your entire life was leading up to that one moment.

A tarp and a couple poles for $53? Meh.
Even at that price it's not a very good deal and the original $179 MSRP is absurd.

REI has been making a lot of weird product decisions lately and seems to be gearing their product line towards tech worker urbanites. They seem to be putting a lot more of their house-branded stuff on clearance lately so it'll be interesting to see how that works out for them.

It's worse than that - you have to supply the poles. This is just a few stakes, some guy line, and a glorified tarp. These types of kits go for $20 - $30 on Amazon all day long.

LOL, I can't take the credit, it was most likely from an ancient fark photoshop contest or something. You just have to file these things away until they come up again Wink

Wow good catch, I definitely didn't look too closely at the pics or description and missed this. "REI adjustable tarp poles sold separately"

I figured at a glance, for $50 maybe it at least came with some really nice convenient hardware. Nope! Now you've got me hunting on amazon for these though!

I searched for "tarp shelter" before I initially responded to this thread. I wanted to confirm my initial reaction about this product's price. With the way inflation has been going this past year, there's always the possibility it's me that needs to recalibrate.

In OP's defense he's just sharing with the community a significant markdown. And I will say I trust products from REI to more likely be higher quality than a random equivalent found on Amazon.

Cursory glance at Amazon shows "no name" sil-nylon tarps coming in at a higher price and weighing more than this one for the same size. Looked at reviews where people purchased it on sale for about 100$ and were happy Seems like a pretty good deal if you're looking for lightweight and small. No doubt you can get a blue poly tarp for 1/3 the cost that weighs 3 times as much.

Tyvek. Just go on ebay, find a tyvek seller. Buy the 9ft by whatever feet you want for about $20

This thread is full of people not understanding what this tarp is designed for.

It's a ultralight tarp designed for backpacking where every oz matters. Please check any of the cottage company tarps on the market and let me know if any of them come close to the price/weight of this thing. $50 is a very good deal what it is.

To the guy who mentioned tyvek, yeah tyvek is great but also heavier. A similar 9.5'x9.5' sheet of tvek would be around 20oz vs the 12oz for the rei one. A pretty substantial difference in the world of UL backpacking.
