These are all off lease. Unlike Dell Outlet who sometimes sells returns, overstocks, or QC rejects, Dell refurbished is part of the group that leases out computers to buyers (like the leasing unit of your car dealer) - mainly small businesses and large corporations.

Someone was using the computer for some time, but usage may vary. It could have been left on someone's desk for 3 years or it could have been dropped a dozen times on concrete. After Dell Leasing takes it back, cleans it, makes sure everything runs, they then assess and assign a cosmetic grade. A is the highest, so it should look almost perfect - e.g. no dent no scratch.

This is done by human so sometimes they make a mistake and assign the wrong grade or didn't realize something is broken, so in that case you can complain to them and they will very likely offer some remedy to you.

I would only recommend grade A because they are already so cheap. But if you're also interested in other grades most of those are available on eBay (I used to bid on grade B on eBay and you might save an additional $20 or $40).
You can use code: FIRE7060DEAL for 40% off 7060 Desktops which have 8th gen intel processors, not as good as 50% off but its something...
Walk out the door with a reasonable full computer (Dell though, so expect proprietary stuff) for $150 or so with SSD drive. That's not bad for a SFF.

With the 40% off 7060 and another 21% cb, the 7060 with i5-8500 is only about $120. I'd just picked up a 5050 (i5-6500) during thanksgiving, and the kid is already complaining it's too slow for valorant. Is the 8500 worth upgrading over 6500?

Sure, just add a $10 USB WiFi stick.

yesterday i talked to a pc pro concerning dell vs hp desktops, the differences he stated were that hp uses standard parts where dell will use proprietary parts. he feels hp would generally be a better deal; also i have heard that hp parts are a bit better quality.

I bought an $88 acer refurb as a W11 test, backup machine. Added 4gb to make it 8. Works great for productivity and browsing. Just did my taxes on it. Lots of SD threads to read about other low power uses.

It is a Celeron but has acceptable speed. Not sure which gen i3 or i5 it compares to.

This one is $111 or so and has 8gb.

Both brands are garbage in the consumer realm. Both use proprietary boards, power supplies and cases for most models.

There may be some models that do use standard components, but they are few and far between. I can't even recall any off the top of my head.

For the best experience with standard components, build it yourself. You get to cut the corners then.

build it yourself is good, i used to do that. with windows 10 pro going for $150, it costs me more than just modifying a refurbished business class machine. after 3 builds i stopped, just don't need a game machine, so not going to bother.

what are your thoughts that HP may have the better components over Dell?

There are cheaper ways of getting a win pro license. Ebay, amazon.

Prebuilt bios options are very limited. You're forced to use jedec complaint ram in upgrades because boards don't support xmp. Cases have poor air flow... list goes on and on.

Better components? I think it's the same. Ask the person who told you this to justify why they think they're better.

Acer was selling refurbished Aspire XC SFF desktops for months on eBay at $175 after savings. Much better specs: i3-10105, 8GB (2nd slot open), 256GB nvme. Compare 10th gen i3 to 6th gen i5 you might be surprised.
