I've seen a loot of people complaining about rei member only deals so here is a good opportunity to join.

Spend at least $50 on an items or items.
Add the $30 membership.
Receive a $30 gift card emailed to you.

Deal ends January 26.

I'm excited I finally took the plunge and joined. Members receive 10% back on regular priced items. Free shipping on any order.

I've never bought anything full price at rei, but the clearance deals can be fantastic and you won't have to pay shipping on a 70% off item because you can't meet the minimum free shipping requirements.

Yes you are paying for the membership, but will immediately be gifted that back in a store credit.

Beware. Their "REI Dividend" has had significant changes. They call it "REI Rewards" now.

Last August, they retroactively changed it for the entire year's accumulation -- you used to be able to withdraw your rewards as cash/cheque post-July of the following year. That's allowed no more. You can only use the rewards accumulated in-store or online.

This also applies if you had their REI Mastercard with 1-5% rewards back on any purchase anywhere.

I had a significant amount accumulated through the year, as that's the only CC I use for rewards. Bam....suddenly, I was told you can't cash it out. Everything I earned January through August is now locked to REI. Wish I knew that from the start. There's only so much overpriced (MSRP or greater) REI stuff one can buy.

Worst part, you don't get a straight answer from any of their employees. Call in to their CC, call in to REI, speak to an in-store employee -- you get different answers from everyone. But view the terms and conditions, it's in black and white. No more "cashing it out". Period. Full stop. Doesn't matter where you earned the rewards (REI or via the Mastercard).

If you're cool with that, then fine. So be it. But don't expect them to give you a clear answer.

I bought a membership 15 years ago but can never justify spending on the markup. Everything there is about 20% more expensive. Sure, they have sales and the garage sales, but it's not worth it for casual customers. If you spend thousands on gear every year, you might find value.

The loophole to cash out despite the restriction, is you purchase an item using all of those rewards points.

Then you return the item in the store

The store does not have a way of reloading those rewards points back to your account, and they give you cash from the register

I just did this last week to cash out about $110 in REI CC rewards

Now that most of what they sell, has been opened up to retailers such as Amazon and others, REI has been put in a difficult situation.

15-20 yrs ago for example - if you needed camping equipment, or CamelBak, or other types of outdoor specialized products, you HAD to go to REI, EMS, or a professional bike shop etc. Now you can almost always find the same product for less, except for products where pricing is actually dictated by the manufacturer and the retailer(s) carrying the products must receive approval before pricing reductions.

REI is nice to look around and try stuff out at but I usually find the stuff cheaper from places like Backcountry during their sales. Or even the manufacturers themselves when they have sales, like Patagonia or Columbia.

I had to buy a winter jacket for my mom and REI was $100 more for a Columbia parka and the cheapest place actually ended up being Dick's.

Does anyone know what happens to the $30 if you return an item purchase with the bonus gift card in this deal? Officially REI says you forfeit the money, but I've heard of customers getting a regular gift card and wondering if anyone has experienced this scenario? TIA

You're absolutely right. Now that I think about it, it was probably closer to 20 or whenever my hairline started receding.

Yeah I feel similarly. Great place to look around and try stuff on. I still use REI for items that I am worried could be counterfitted on amazon (its all pulled from the same bucket in the warehouse) and the manufacturer doesn't have a better price or return policy.
