You can also use a few bolts to hold the 2x4s together for a couple dollars.

Yes but:
-Width can't be changed on the fly as you use / add wood
-Wood will last much longer not have multiple holes drilled in it.
-Even with two bolts per connection uprights will start to sag quickly..and break.
-Still need to attach front and back sections together which isn't as simple as a "few bolts."
-Doesn't look as nice
-This requires no tools or bolts (other than a saw)
-Can't replace a piece wood without (probably) cutting off a rusted bolt.
-"Couple of dollars" probably is more like $8-10 after nuts, bolts, washers, etc.

You could make a chicken 'dinner' by throwing a raw chicken breast into plain boiling water or you could take the time to do it right with the proper ingredients and cooking methods. I guess the method depends on the target audience.

BTW, if you really wanted to save money...you can stack wood for free Wink

Good grief man. It's a couple of bolts and a cheap wood crib. Literally none of the stuff you said matters at all.

*Doesn't matter to you.

For me, I'd rather have something that lasts longer, is more functional, looks better, faster to assemble etc for just a few more dollars. Also, I doubt you'll ever have to replace these brackets. You'll be building that cheap wood 'crib' every couple of years as the 2x4's will certainly split where you drilled the holes and the bolts will be seized / rusted by then (using the "few bolts method").

Not to mention it isn't 'just a few bolts' unless you are only creating one side of a "U."
Fairly basic example of a DIY firewood rack:

Anything more basic won't last a year as the weight of the firewood will cause the sides to push out.

Being cheap can cost more money, even in the short run.

More to the point...why wouldn't you just stack the wood on itself or against a tree...for free...if it doesn't matter at all? Not my logic.
