I am in the market for a SP9, but this is like buying a new sedan that is missing the backseat (because of the 8GB soldered RAM). Yes, you can do most things, but you will never have that extra seating when you need it.
They are surprisingly good. Not nearly as good as the iPad Pro's speakers, but definitely decent.
The 8GB RAM is a serious bottleneck though that slows this system down. Rumor has it MS won't make an SP10 with 8GB or RAM. 16GB will be the new minimum. As it should have always been.
8GB of RAM is the bottleneck that will hold this system back. It should not be made with 8GB of RAM at all. Otherwise the price is nice.
It's a shame MS makes all these laptops in childrens' colors that one can't take to a business meeting without being laughed at. They then clear them out as fake "refurbished" when nobody buys them. Notice there are no Platinum color laptops that are in the "Refurbished" sale. Why make them at the first place?
I'm a PC guy but other have macs and 8GB is fine for average user.. I do agree it's a shame that in 2024 apple is pushing 8GB.
I agree. It's a shame either MS or apple is still making 8GB laptops. 8GB creates a bottleneck. They only make them so that they can advertise a "low starting price". They then sell them as fake "refurbished" because people don't want them.
I have a 7+ and it runs fine with 8gb but no doubt these machines should come with 16gb as a minumum, ram is cheap so charge and extra 50 bucks and give us what we want since we cant upgrade it.

Its an issue, I have a 7+ and its great for travelling but 16gb would be very helpful. Not a deal breaker, these machines have real power, run windows and are very light.
Chrome takes another 2GB. No big deal and room to run other office apps
Zoom/Teams + Chrome all fine. I also don't run more than 3 chrome browsers and each with maybe 3 tabs max. I run chromes under different Google logins so I can easily have many different bookmarks and diff extensions activated. This is why I only use Chrome browser 99% of the time which is a piggy on memory. There are also memory performance changes on chrome to drop memory use on in-active tabs. I see people sometimes with 15+ tabs on a single chrome browser, kind if weird as I see them having a hard time and checking on each icon to find the right tab... I use the bookmark bar right at the top for top urls, i don't use the "bookmark" page and I find that to be more efficient and Apple silicon loads the page so fast (assuming fast network) I find this to be more efficient for my workflow.
Overall, I agree 16Gb is ideal (but who doesn't want more memory and disk space??) but saying 8GB in unusable is silly when ton of machines are selling at 8Gb and they are fine. No one cares about swap blah blah when transfer is much faster and last longer than the legacy hard drives… you guessed it used for swap too.
But only Apple is criminal at selling memory upgrades at $200 when surface same upgrade is $300. Damn Apple!! I hate Apple!

I trimmed my win11 down to as low as 1.6GB on a regular window s laptop on boot up I documented it here for anyone who was buying machines with just 8GB and wondering what can be used on it . https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=
