Good news - the fear mongering around this issue, now nearly 2 1/2 years old, has not played out as predicted! The article linked, like many at the time of the M1 release, speaks of a hypothetical situation that simply isn't happening. At my org, of the nearly 150 M1/8GB machines none have run into this issue. We'd be seeing rumblings of a class action lawsuit at this point if that was the case, I'd imagine, but actual issues as you describe are still rare (and I've been looking).

Now the reduced write speed in the 256GB M2 models is a bit of a bummer - if you research a little further you'll see that they aren't using the same components between M1 and M2. Sure, still the same SOC architecture, but different SSD chips in the 256 models.
These are the same as the edu prices šŸ”„šŸ”„
I did some Google searches and can't find anything specific about TBW on the m2 version of the Mac mini. Perhaps you could link something instead of an insinuation?

Yeah these "sale" prices are the actual retail sticker. Brand new base M2 is $499 @ Apple

Military/Students can save 10% + 3% with Apple Card
Where can students save 10% + 3%?

Thats not true at all, the MSRP on the new M2 mini is $599. The MSRP on the M1 Mini was $699, it is now $100 cheaper MSRP, and $499 is $100 that MSRP price.

Hopefully this means future sale prices will be even lower. $450 or even $400 possibly? Certainly makes a compelling option compared to Windows and Chrome PCs for non-gaming use.

What proportion of the population cares about how much RAM their computer has? Anyone who even knows what RAM is and cares can buy more.

You can pay to upgrade to 16GB or more if that's not enough for you. If we make this Mac Mini a 16GB/512GB it's $1000 not on sale (education price is lower as would sales prices like this).

How much is a comparable Dell? The closest one is the Optiplex 7000 Micro. That costs $1260 for a machine with an i7-12700T, 16GB of RAM, and a 512 GB SSD. That's a good processor but isn't nearly as powerful as the M2.

Sure, you can build something but that's only an option/interest for a small portion of the population. Someone could buy some other brand but we also need to consider reliability and customer service. Both of Apple's are excellent.
