I was looking today for a 4 TB SSD to use just as a storage drive for files. So this is a bit tempting. Unfortunately my board only has space for 2 drives and I just got a 2TB WD one.

You can always buy an NVME add-in card, though they run about $30+.

I can, but I'm tired of the giant computer case. Trying to have it as small a computer case as possible. Which these days it's really based on how big is your video card.

why would you want to pay for the speed of this drive if it's just for storing photos and archived materials etc

Just buy a used PC off eBay and stick it in a closet somewhere. Turn it on with wake-on-lan when you need access to your files or to do backups.
PCIE 3, not 4
Also, this is good for reading, not good writing data (not very good as C drive)
Plus version is faster, but still not for writing.
Almost any ssd will be fine as a c drive (boot drive) I use 2.5" ssd. Pc boots in 5 secs. The extra bandwidth from nvme drives is really only useful if you have two in a one computer and transfer files back and forth.

IIRC, this was offered for $238 briefly during BF.so this is the best price yet for this drive! Perfect for my use case.
