I believe that the Playstation 5 only reads external drives up to the maximum speed of this drive so this is perfect for gamers as you can't make use of faster external drives anyways.

the question is twofold.
1. can PS5 access drives faster than 550MB/S during file transfer? yes, it can, the interface is USB 3 Gen 2 so it is rated 10Gb/s (1.25GB/s). and you will likely see that when you TRANSFER TO external drive. However, due to extremely slow write speed of the internal NVME (yes, Sony's flash has garbage speed for writing), copy from regular hdd/ sata ssd or nvme ssd takes about the same amount of time) to internal sony NVME.

2. does PS5 read drive faster than 550MB/S during gaming? no. no PS4 games can take advantage of full SATA speed (in fact, almost none of the games other than some PS5 titles can take advantage of half of SATA speed due to almost all game engine designed for no faster than 200MB/s disk access speed, that's why changing older console's storage from HDD to SSD can at most give you half the load speed in game, when the hardware is capable of doing 4 or 5X the speed.

Weren't 2TB portables around $60 not long ago? Is this one different or have prices gone up that far?

I have the extreme it's also water/dust repellent which is important to me. I don't think this one is unfortunately but it's also 2/3 the price.

You're thinking of hard disk based drives. This is solid state. Smaller, much faster.

You're probably thinking of hard drive based portable drives.

You can't even get an internal 2TB SSD for $60.

This is a good deal. If water proof and shock proof is not that big of a deal for you, get a 2tb gen 3 or gen 4 and a sabrent enclosure (19.99 refurbished from amazon sold by SBT, but comes brand new). Did it with a gen 4 2tb around 110 (i had amex deal got it for around 85, qlc dramless though Kingston NV2) + the enclosure for about 130. I get 950MBps speed, no over heating. And can use my nvme ssd in my laptop and desktop and PS5 as needed too

That was probably the extreme, which another commenter linked above. It is up to 2x as fast as this one.
