Imagine buying a $1300 computer with a 512gb SSD. What makes me so angry about Apple's business practices is that the parts bill for a 512gb and 1tb SSD has got to be less than $30.
I guess I should be thankful they finally upgraded from 8gb of Ram.

They still sell a base model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of disk for $599. That's actually a $100 reduction in price from the M1 version.

$1199 if you go through Apple Edu. Apple can charge whatever they want as long as it sells. It's basic economics. Every company will maximize profits the same way.
This M2 Pro model is a smart move for the in-between base model and Mac Studio crowd. I very much dislike the MacOS ui, but you have to give their hardware department props for these chips.
Yes, but most likely a person okay with that spec would be okay with a 100-150$ (on sale) chromebook
I doubt it, I've used those painfully slow $150 chromebooks and opening more than a couple tabs kills the poor thing. The base mac mini on the other hand can edit 4k video with effects in real time while browsing the web.
How much is your time worth? Waiting an extra second for every page to load adds up over the life of the computer. Don't skimp on your diet, mattress, chair, computer, or anything else you're going to use for thousands of hours or more.
Who knew disliking scammy and wasteful retail practices like HP Ink cartridges and Apple's underspeccing on base models meant someone is broke.
The people who say stuff like this and pad their ego showing people how much they can spend are typically the brokest... a fool and his money are soon departed 😂

M2 is awesome but it isn't magic. Apple has no control over the size of web resources and that's still going to suck badly, and entirely unnecessarily. Their machines might do a bit better than PCs when totally gutted, but there's no reason they need to be gutted at all for $20 worth of better parts that would make the machine extremely good for years to come.
I'd far rather Apple just sell a quality machine for $1k or basically whatever they feel they need to to get the profit margins they want but still sell people a good machine that will last for years to come. Selling 8gb ram and 256gb SSD to unsuspecting customers in 2023 is just a pure scam. The price of those chips cost the same to make as better ones. It's just unnecessary e-waste in future landfills. No different than HP Ink cartridges and similar practices that get completely shit on while somehow Apple gets a pass.
Macs are, in fact, Slickdeals. Why? Resale value. I have a heavily used but in otherwise good shape MacBook Air M1 8GB that I bought over a year ago for $750, I could easily sell it for $600.
Same with iPhones. $1000 for a phone! Crazy, huh? Well, I get 85% of that value back in a year when I sell it before the new ones drop and switch back to my iPhone SE for a month. Meanwhile a $300 Android phone is worth essentially nothing a year later.
If you're willing to SELL your devices, Apple is actually the cheapest brand to own.

Retaining value doesn't make it a slick deal. But you are right that apple stuff holds value incredibly well. I rotate my mac stuff every 1-2 years

That's not slick richy-rich! 80lvl slick is to get iPhone (let's say 11 for this year) for $100 (ok ok, $172 with taxes and first month of service), use it for one year and sell it for $220.
