Would be nice to get a $99 one-way fare from the EAST Coast ...someday. I know that's asking too much, but I can dream! =(

Sounds like you've never been. I've done Bali, French Polynesia, Caribbean, Europe, and still found Maui breathtaking

How much is $99 Hawaiian dollars in US dollars?

It's a joke.

baffling why anyone would take an 11 hour flight to Hawaii when they could get anywhere in Europe in 7 hours
If you're honestly confused and not just trying to be contrary and snarky then here are some reasons: you might appreciate surfing and mountain hikes, you might have family or friends there, you might like seeing rainbows every day, you might find the cultural atmosphere relaxing, you might have visa considerations that make it harder to leave the US, you might want to see volcanos and black sand beaches, you might also simply like to see new places

Agreed - Caribbean as well.
Because hawaii and europe are totally the same, of course. And Caribbean Polynesian culture is something you have to see to believe!

For a first-time two day trip (that's just how it is this time Smilie but I'm sure I'll be back), would folks recommend Honolulu&Oahu, or Kona&Big Island? I've narrowed it to those two choices.

I think I'd be nibbling and beaching more than surfing and snorkeling. Quite keen on visiting some coffee farms and sampling the joe.

It depends on what you're into. I was lucky enough to work from Hawaii for 5 weeks during the pandemic, and it was no joke the best 5 weeks of my entire life. I hope to move their permanently some day. I spent the first two weeks on the big island and the last three in Kauai. I was also in Hawaii over a decade ago where I spent a week on Oahu.

Oahu is the only island with a large city and "interstate" highway. It also has Pearl Harbor which may be of interest. When I go to Hawaii, I want to get as far away from cities and anything reminding me of I95 as possible, so I have little interest in Oahu. That said, there are plenty of beautiful spots on Oahu away from Honolulu.

The Big Island is amazing; you have Hawaii Volcanos national park where you may get to see lava flowing (also has some decent hiking), Captain Cook monument hike to a great snorkeling spot, one of the highest rated beaches in the entire world, a mountain so high you can go see snow if you're tired of the heat (Mauna Kea). You have both Hilo and Kona which are both worth checking out. Also green sand beach, one of just a handful in the entire world. You can also watch the sunset from the southernmost point in the US. There's also the Kona coffee farms to check out if you're into the.

Kauai is spectacularly beautiful, but you didn't mention that so I'll just leave you with this famous movie scene filmed there: https://youtube.com/watch?t=1m15s&v=xn-LE8iwZJk

Bottom line is no matter where you go in Hawaii, you're virtually guaranteed to have the time of your life. I tell everyone who's never been that you have this image in your mind of how great it's going to be, and it far exceeds that.

When I can get a $99 flight from west coast to NYC.
SFO LAX SAN usually have $99-139 one way direct flights to JFK or EWR if you buy at least 6 weeks ahead of time.

Some dates doesn't make sense. Dates of deal from mainland to HI come before the deal dates from HI to mainland. So you get one way discount from Seattle. From CA they are more competitive because of direct presence of Southwest.
They have to compete against Delta and Alaska in Seattle. I believe Hawaiian only flies to HNL and OGG while Delta and Alaska fly to LIH and KOA as well.

Bali is awesome. Way cheaper than Hawaii foods!... Gallon of milk in Maui is nearly $15.00, YIKES!
Just got back from Bali 3 weeks ago, it is gorgeous but insane traffic!
