Yeah, I used to love Costco and did most of my grocery shopping there, but I very rarely shop there anymore due to the insane price increases. I do the math on some items and it turns out to be no different than buying it full price at Kroger or wherever. I've mostly switched to Sam's and been very happy. Also, what is up with the prime meat shortage at Costco? That was one of my last remaining reasons to go there every week. Zero prime anything at any Costco in my area.

The comments in here are so odd. Went to my local Costco first time in months- all the food prices were down. 2 dozen eggs were high, like $4.00 for 24 eggs, limit 2 but everything else was prepandemic pricing. Maybe it's regional ???

Looks like a bunch of junk with sky high sodium
When are they going to have the deal on the big box of merci again
Around Thanksgiving they had 23.8 oz box for 8.39 on sale and 11.99 off sale
I was hoping they would have these again for Valentine's day but I haven't seen them
Maybe for Easter?

Corporate greed has got into costco too, there is no more joy of shopping bulk anymore, if you do the math its same price as if you buy that at HEB (Texas grocery chain) and top of that you need to pay increased member fee

Is Best Foods Mayonnaise a known thing out west? Never heard of it before, label looks like Hellman's, Wikipedia says that Unilever distributes Best Way west / Hellmans East but I've never noticed Hellmans in CA.

Maybe. I have watched the prices soar over the past 1-2 years in Dallas. 30-50% increases. I always bring up the fake sales, too. Go in one week and say a salad mix is $4.99, next week there is a "sale" and the same item is now $7.99 - 3.00 = $4.99 SALE! Ugh. Sam's Club is more honest in that department - they don't price adjust on items purchased in the store because prices can fluctuate and if they do a price drop - THEY LIST THE DAMN DATE OF THE LAST PRICE AND WHAT IT WAS ORIGINALLY PRICED AT ON THAT DATE. On sale for $4.99, last list price was $10.99 on XX/XX/XXXX, even on super clearance items.

I cannot believe I am complimenting the Walmart Inc. Peeps for honesty in pricing. And their staff is so freaking nice at the Sam's Club I normally go to- they play music and it's just a fun atmosphere. I have a Sam's Plus membership(in addition to my Costco Exec membership) and their CS(phone/chat/email/etc.) has also blown me away. Seriously, me from two years ago is side-eyeing me hard for everything coming out of my mouth right now.
I think I'm going to check out Sam's club now thank you

Some stuff is more nationwide, but much of the produce in particular will be regional.

Wow Eggs are $8 for 24 from Costco in NE Florida. This is as of yesterday. Also the eggs are SMALL. Not like what you used to see from a typical "large" egg.
Got organic eggs last week in Costco(northern NJ). Price was $7.59 for 2 dozen organic extra large eggs.

Newer member, joined in January. My first coupon book was given to me at the warehouse. I'm set up for physical mail, will I get these offers in the mail? And if so, when? Thanks!

Yep. I have a Sam's Plus membership and a Costco Executive membership and agree with these statements. Prices at my local Costco have been getting absurd. Meat at Sam's has inflated but not nearly the amount that Costco has, and Costco hasn't reduced prices much since the shortages. Plus Sam's pricing says either "Instant/Scan&Go Savings," "Clearance," or "New Lower Price" which is more transparent than the change/asterisk/no original price like Costco's tags have.

Costco sources much higher quality products, though. It's crazy how many food products they have that are USDA Organic. It's not a fair 1:1. Most of the products at Walmart/Target/Aldi are not organic. You have to specifically seek those out. At Costco, it seems like every other product is organic. The products they sell usually have far superior ingredients list as well. All of this is important for healthier eating. I go to Sam's Club and it's like waking up in the 1990s where your packaged food offerings were one-size fits all. Costco they actually realize consumers' preferences are calling for alternatives to unhealthy artificially flavored and chemically sprayed products.

Go look at the oils, especially avocado and olive oils. They sell the few brands that actually score 100% in independent lab testing for authenticity. You may find avocado oil for $1 cheaper elsewhere, but it's cut with canola oil. Same with olive oil. The fraud in the cooking oil industry is off the charts.

So Costco is very deliberate with what they purchase, and that's something very overlooked or not even realized by shoppers. My brother swears by Aldi's, and I've gone there a little bit more. However, you have to be a lot more diligent. Several of Aldi's oils tested for lower quality and were cut with cheaper oils passed off as avocado/olive. So while Aldi's may be cheap with SOME products, there's also a minefield of products that aren't what they're marketed as.

Also, I buy laundry detergent and other consumer staples at Costco that are far cheaper than competitors. Not sure where people buy that stuff, but Target is dramatically more expensive.
You are correct. Anecdotally, I am a member of both BJ's and Costco, and price comparison is difficult because, for example, BJ's sells plain eggs whereas the "minimal" egg at Costco is cage free. Regardless of if you care about that, cage-free at any store is likely going to be more expensive than the "minimal" eggs, so comparing Costco's cheapest eggs (cage free) to BJ's (cage) isn't a real valid comparison. As you mentioned Costco also seems to sell a lot of organic stuff which is difficult to compare prices with other places.

You have to look at your purchases holistically. I'd say 85% of our shopping is costco/BJ's, with Costco really taking over the bulk of that over the past year. The rest is Aldi/job lot. Costco/BJ's is essentially our grocery store, I can't recall the last time I really stepped into a conventional grocer besides being in a pinch for milk or something.

At BJ's I get 5% back, at Costco it's 4% back (5% on travel). Gas is cheaper at both stations, often $0.10-$0.20/gallon, and I literally drive by there on my way to work so gas savings alone pays for the cost of member ship and then some. Then there's other savings - we just bought our first pair of glasses (4 people in the household wear glasses) at Costco and they're about 1/3 what we'd spend for something comparable at an optician, but we have an actual B&M to go to for fitment (We've bought a lot at Zenni, which I'd estimate is about 1/2-2/3 of what Costco charges). This pair was for a child that seems to be in the habit of misplacing glasses.

We booked a trip through Costco travel for the sole purpose of capturing the 5% back (2% executive, 3% CC) and on top of that I'll get another $520 back in shop cards (total rebate will be over $700). The trip isn't any more expensive than through the vendor directly.

Pharmacy - we don't take a lot of Rx drugs but Costco flat pricing (not going through insurance) saves us about $60/yr.

Tires - bought a new set of tires for my SUV last fall. About $200 cheaper than local chain place, plus I got 4% back ~$45.

They also have various other things you could save money on I haven't looked into - car buying program, HVAC, etc.

BJ's and Sam's have comparable programs, I've never used them.

Then there's the warranty program (basically forever on anything but TVs and computers), and the price adjustment policy.

I don't want to sound like a Costco acolyte but if you really look at all that Costco (or BJs or Sams) provides, chances are you'll find ways to pay for the membership many times over.

I think it's more about what products you tend to buy. I've always done math, and wholesale club prices weren't necessarily better on a lot of products even a decade ago. Some items are indeed cheaper, but some are actually the same or even higher per unit/weight. For example, their milk price isn't good. You score better deals from regular stores. Same for some snacks. Bread tends to be cheaper at Cost, and so are eggs. Spinach is a lot cheaper at Costco, but tomato price isn't any better. You just gotta divide and conquer across stores.
