I don't have the exact AVR but wanted to share my recent experience with another Marantz - Cinema 50 - which is the slightly upgraded (SR6015 equivalent) 2022 model. I also received Denon X4800H a week ago and was able to compare the 2 side by side. From my non-scientific blind tests, I couldn't tell the difference in both 2-channel music in pure direct as well as movie Atmos soundtracks.

X4800H is supposedly an upgrade (according to the internet though priced the same) but in terms of performance there was no audible difference in critical listening - 24-bit/192kHz/88.2kHz high res 2-channel music and Atmos tracks from RPO / EoT / Dune. I ended up keeping the Denon due to better display but that was it. While Marantz doesn't do well in measurements (here is one for SR7015 [audiosciencereview.com]) due to the distortions they deliberately introduce through HDAM, none of it is audible unless someone has golden ears. I'd expect SR5015 to be sonically as good as Cinema 50 / SR6015 with a little weaker room correction and less channels (Atmos 5.1.2 is sufficient for most living rooms).

BTW, A4L [accessories4less.com] is $100 less with the same 3-yr warranty.

Great question. To double or triple the price needs justification. Manufacturers realize when someone purchases their top end units, they are also buying higher end speakers installed in larger rooms. Many times the better speakers have lower impedance, and are harder to drive. To reach the same spl in a larger room, they need set at a higher level. So these units have to run with more current, and most likely more channels. The build quality increases with aluminum face plates, larger heat sinks, and higher end, larger transformers and amp outputs. They also will have larger, and higher end capacitors. Not to mention better processors and DACs. You should also have a bit more control over fine tuning your room with a higher end unit. More connection options, and pre outs for an external amplifier. These units will handle heat better, keep distortion lower, and have a better sound floor - one of the most important qualities of a good amp. That silence between notes. Many audiophiles will tell you as you go up the alphabet with amplifiers, you go down in sound quality. And that comes with managing heat. Your better surround receivers will manage heat the best (even class D sub amps get hot), keeping distortion to a minimum. (Tube guys - I hear you, but you still need to stay under 1% even if you're only running at 10 watts).

Thank you, I have an SR5006, and I absolutely love it. Unfortunately I'm upgrading to true 4K laser projector and my current receiver would be missing the HDR features I'm looking forward to. Since I don't need the audio now, I think I'll wait and save for a Marantz 77-- series preamp from accessories for less, which would make my wallet feel better after buying the projector.

Did you compare it after Dirac measurements? Apparently that's the killer feature on the newest generation AVR's, the auto eq capability.

Not a bad deal, but I REALLY wish more receivers would support wireless rear speakers.

Even most that do generally support wireless speakers don't support wireless surrounds.

Ugh!

Hmm, it might be time to upgrade my aging AVR-X4300H finally. It currently only powers a pair of Pioneer up-firing Atmos speakers and some custom rears as my front stage is powered by an Emotiva XPA-3 first-gen (Paradigm Studio 100s, and a 590CC in the front stage).

I've been lucky that my HDMI ports haven't had any of the X4300H issues... but it'd be nice to be able to do 120hz on the C1 vs the 4k60 limitation.

I just want a new Yamaha to come out that fixes the issue with 4K 120 HDMI 1.2 boards and has pre outs for LR channels. 7.2 channels. 500 bucks.

Dirac isn't available yet, expected in March but not the actual Dirac feature that matters the most - DLBC - will come next year. I am happy with my miniDSP HD and don't plan to invest $800 (have multiple subs).

Not for you, but just for other people to know. It will certainly happen. An Onkyo can already be bought at Costco for 400 with similar features, just without pre-outs. Yamaha's boards had issues this last year.

MultiEQ XT instead of MultiEQ XT32 is reason enough to pass on this

Marantz av receivers aren't designed for critical listening. Tons of features that sounds really good with movies. Critical listening means buying a different kind of product with few features and all the money spent on power supply, 2 channel amp, quality preamp and volume pot instead of licensing fees to dolby, dts, imax, 9 channels, etc.

Good input. had a chance to install & listen to a Cinema 50 yesterday, would have to agree with you(wasn't side by side though).
If people would/could actually do this they would also realize many of these measurements often debated, they would not be able to hear(pick out) the differences either.

I would add if you have XT32, buying the Audyssey's Editor app adds some main benefits of Dirac, many would not miss it especially missing a main feature you pointed out.
