I think it means that it's a hammock style tarp which hangs between two trees. None of the pics show an actual hammock as you said.

I ordered it and it arrived - is just the tarp. The idea is that you put it up over your hammock. It's quite nice that it's double sized. I use a double hammock and sleep diagonally in it - that way you're lying pretty much flat.

Some who hike for several days at a time, including the Appalachian Trail, use a similar system and a sleeping bag to cut down on weight rather than a tent. Of course this will only offer rain and sun protection. The reviews say the stakes are garbage, so consider that in this price point having to buy quality stakes. For the price, this seems to be a good deal.

This is specifically made to go above hammocks and has limited tie down points which means limited pitches. It will be next to useless for anything but hammock camping.

Check out videos on tarp pitches to see what you can do if you have more tie down points. https://youtu.be/L8lw64__n8M

I recommend Free Soldier tarps if you want an inexpensive camping tarp. There are much better brands but the prices are also much higher.

You'd want to use a square tarp with more tie down points for that.

It's definitely a good deal on the tarp. I've got one from a previous deal and it's good; I'll bring it along camping if the weather forecast is iffy even if I'm going to be using my tent, since the tarp on its own makes a decent (if compact) cover for sitting/cooking.

But I wouldn't say Wise Owl's hammock gear is appropriate for ultra-light thru hiking. This is because even among hammock systems, wise owl's stuff is a little on the heavier side (including the OEM stakes, as you note). But also for any hammock system by the time you've got the hammock, tarp, bugnet, underquilt, stakes, and suspension system, you aren't really saving much weight vs a comparable tent.
