This is a good quality midi lathe. I have had it for 2 or 3 years and it was a substantial upgrade from my jet mini.

One heads up is if you use it in a garage or it's outdoors, I've found the inverter motor will trip GFCI protected outlets almost immediately.

That isn't a big deal as long as you have a non gfci breaker or outlet you can use.

Also mine came with the forward and reverse wired backwards for some reason. But reversing directions is a super handy feature when working through sandpaper grits.

Other than that it takes standard attachments and mt2 parts, has good power, great adjustability. I'd get a new tool rest for bowls and things.

These prices do not seem worth dealing with Woot for the discount. Spend an extra $20 at Home Depot for the joiner:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Delta.../205112293

$40 more for the miter saw on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Delta-Equi...B07DKXRJ15

$50 more for the miter saw stand on Lowes:
https://www.lowes.com/pd/DELTA-St...d/50237913

The lathe might be worth it, it's an additional $100 on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Delta-Indu...B00309ZZRQ

These are discounted items, just be aware that the discounts are WAY less than how they appear on Woot's site. I would personally wait for a more reliable vendor.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful write up

I'm interested in one of these been hunting one for a while. Just can't decide if this is actually a deal with biting on plus boot is just terrible.

I also got one of these lathes, I got it for $500 from Amazon warehouse a couple of years ago.

I've only ever made pens and handles for some smaller tools. But I've probably made 50+ so far, no issues at all. I'm a big fan.

The only issue with it, and it's very well known, is the forward and reverse switch are reversed. No idea why, it seems to be a known issue going back like 10 years. I don't recommend trying to fix it, I read multiple posts about people frying their switch by trying to fix it.

I recommend it if you're looking for a lathe of this size.

How is this a deal on a lathe?

I just did a quick search and pulled up a more powerful Grizzly lathe for less.
And FYI...Grizzly is WELL KNOWN in woodworking.

I don't know if they still have it but Harbor Freight used to carry a Central Machinery Floor standing lathe. It was considered a hidden gem.

What's wrong with Woot? I've never had problems with them. Guarantee they are just shipping all this from Amazon warehouses, using Amazon infrastructure

For one, the delta in question has a more powerful motor. You stated the grizzly was more powerful, but it is only 3/4 HP as opposed to the 1 HP delta.

The delta has three changeable orientations for the drive belt. I'm not sure if the grizzly does as well or if it simply uses the electronics to control speed. Regardless, the delta will have greater torque.

Other considerations are also the rigidity of parts like the tailstock. I'm not making a judgment about the quality of the grizzly in that regard as I don't know, but there is more at play than just the price or size of the lathe here.

It's their support I would be worried about in the event there are any issues. I've only bought a few small items from Woot, and they were fine, but there are complaints about their customer service all up and down these forums. Bigger, more expensive items are more likely to have issues, and I don't think their discount vs other retailers makes it worth it.

Just burn toast a few times and use it to take the burnt layer off some toast and you're good.
