    Get the kind that expands once you're in the air. Otherwise all but the tiniest of pets will be utterly miserable. We fly Alaska from Hawaii to California with an expandable version, and our 11 lbs dog was perfectly happy the entire time.

    20 lbs is A LOT for in-cabin. Is your dog sausage shaped? Unless he has a barrel body and tiny legs, he's going to have trouble fitting into anything a plane will let onboard.
