Decent deal on "grade a" Optiplex Windows Pro desktop for $319 (519 with 200 off).
i7-8700 with 32gb ddr4 w/old 2gb radeon r5 430, and 512GB ssd. USB-C w/displayport for 3rd out = very decent little triple-monitor stock-trader and number-crunching workstation for $320 shipped.
Always liked the i7 8700; this antique should crunch numbers swimmingly for the next decade. RAM and CPU alone get you to over $300. Decent deal--needed a cheap workstation that still had some grunt.
Glen's an expert and taught me about getting the cashback. First register with Cap On Shopping. Don't need to be a Cap One card user. Search Dell Refurb cashback offerings. May not get much many times. Keep checking. One day, you'll get a 20%/30%/40% offering. It may not need to be for the exact product you're looking for. For example, I chose a laptop cashback and got the cashback for a non-laptop. I'm not sure how Cap One would know by just a transaction total. It'll take 5-7 days likely to see it in Cap One. Then it will take awhile before you can convert it to a gift certificate for a vendor.
Like all cashbacks, it's not perfect; but Capital One is a large reliable financial institution. If you've done it correctly, they're not going to deny it later.
Don't hate the cashback if it only shows you 5% or whatever. Just keep trying every day or a few times a day. Add something to the Dell Refurb cart then remove it. Play with it. With modern AI these days, they'll get a signal that you didn't make a purchase and suddenly you get a better cashback (only a guess).
Choose the Dell Refurb deals regardless of the cashback. However, if you get a 15%-40% cashback, it's gravy. You know that with Cap One you'll get the credit eventually - as long as it shows up within a week. If it doesn't show up as a pending within a week, then you might not have done it right. Maybe you were trying to work more than one cashback, or you deleted the cookies before purchasing from Dell Refurb. Whatever.

Alot of these little Dells are pretty sweet machines that you can upgrade Ram, HDs, video card, networking, etc. You have to watch the space and power supply limitations but the overall value is phenominal for processing, downloading, media, and have saved a small fortune going this route. Even saving the Windows OS and swapping it for a flavor or Linux is favorable.
Yep very capable for productivity work, I've refurbed a number for my office (7th, 8th and 9th gen) A solid NVME, fill up the memory and you're good to go.
So lets start with the 3+ years old. So what? I only buy grade A and 8th Gen and newer.
I dont really understand the grading system. I recently bought a grade B laptop and it looks as good as brand new, no scratches, no blemishes, no dents, etc.
Are these grades just subjectively determined by different people or is there a barely noticeable tiny difference?
any good laptop for basic word processing, web browsing, and netflix? I prefer atleast 15 inch screen and lightweight if possible. looking to spend under $500

There is no industry standard and as someone who buys thousands of refurbs a year for resale it's very subjective. I stay with A's as that pretty much guarantees condition I need for my customers. B can be less pristeen but not always. Bottom line each dealer has their own grading system. Every system we don't build as in any name brand new or refurb we fully test, remove bloatware, run all updates, etc and we "re-grade" A for us means "like new" or darn close. I minor blemish on the bottom of laptop is irrelevant but anything to do with screen, keybard, touchpad will. We will downgrade it and sell for less. We have a limited return period with our distributors and if we don't inspect and there is concealed damage we eat it. We are mostly brick and mortar but when we ship stuff like big monitors w eopen every box and make sure screens aren't cracked, etc and then we pu our inspected sticker on it. Freight is too expensive too have something that is pre-broken.
rmoore as explained and I appreciate his comments relating to my experience. Bottom line slickdeals promotes their own cashback and I've been warned about mentioning them in specificity. As a point of reference I get thousands of $$$ per monrth in cashback. I use whichever extension is paying the most, the credit card that is paying the most Margins in the pc business suck. Many items are sold for a few points over cost. I compete by being a professional shopper. You can also look for coupon codes on one extension and then use another for cash back. If you don't work the system, it'll work you. My experience with Cap one is ittake 30-45 days to see the actual cashback and you must buy gft cards to utilize. Fortunately for me there are Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, and other cards that work well for me. Sometimes I stray outside the PC world and i've bought stuff that was ridiculously priced at Kohl's or any of the above and then made even more money. My family get ridiculously nice presents becuase basically I'm getting the stuff for free. I don't count cash back in my cost factors for the store --so it's basically freemoney.
I am not a big Dell workstation fan. Their lower end workstations seem more problem prone than most other brands. None of the Dell desktops that I have ever worked on will take a standard sized motherboard making upgrades a pretty short dead end. HP and Leveno also seem to use non standard motherboard sizes which cause the same problems.
All true. Dell, HP, Lenovo are not in the upgrade business, aside from memory and drive, neither is Apple. They are built to be used for a defined period as in 3-4 years an dhten replaced. That is a common big corporate policy and in line with most leasing programs. Laptops never have a standard motherboard design. If a 3 -4 year old machine will suit your needs and for the vast majority of people it will i.e. email, surfing, word, excel, streaming...then refurbs represent a great value. Use it for 3 years at an amortized cost of around $10-$15 a month, dump it on eBay for cheap and go get another one. I usually offer my clients a free data transfer for their old unit and then I strip for parts or I throw in a small SSD and donate it to a charity. It's not a problem for most. Proprietary designed PC's are probably 70% of all pc's manufacturered and sold.

If not today tomorrow. Check in the AM and then in the evening. Units get uploaded several times a day and people like me grab the best ones especially if there is a dcent quantity.
Got the latitude 7420 today, Grade A, $789 - 40% code - 30% cb. It looks brand new with one and a half year ProPlus warranty left. But the battery is at ~70% capacity, will complain to them and see what they can do.
There are more than 10 left currently but no active 40% code.

Got a Condition A Latitude recently, looks brand new even though it should be 5 years old. So how can that be? Replacing the frame can't be profitable for an under $150 laptop or can it be? Maybe it's a green thing, by keeping this stuff out of land fills........i applaud that.
Haven't done the Cash back maneuvers yet, as i don't understand it much or is it even worth while for the everyday buyer?

The under $200 laptops on Dell refurbished (the latitude 5000 touch series) will be good for your needs (I believe they have a decently recent CPU with 2 cores, 4 threads).

What do you guys think about the Latitude 7400 2 in 1 for occasional Lightroom and Photoshop usage? Besides that I would use it to just surf the net and streaming here and there.
The one I'm looking at is the i7-8665U, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD. Looks to have good sRGB coverage and a matte screen. Price is $539 so should be $339 after $200 off.
Also how's Dell's reliability when it comes to their refurb laptops?
TIA!

Dell refurb are 3+ years old and they have fake prices with coupons EVERY week. 30-40% off is normal
