These can also be reset as a normal kindle, you can unenroll from the kids reading program (costs money after the free trial ends), etc. You end up with a discounted kindle, case, and warranty for a pretty good deal.

That's not entirely correct: If you sign out of the Kindle Kids interface, there are still ads according to Amazon's own product description:

"Kindle Kids is automatically set up for your kid to enjoy an ad-free experience. However if you exit Amazon Kids using a passcode, sponsored screensavers will be displayed on the device's lockscreen. Learn More About Ads On Kindle and Fire Tablet."

Never been the case with ours unless they literally just changed it. I'm using a Kids paper white for myself bought right around Christmas. No ads and not using the kids interface.

Same here. Got kids edition and family share with different profiles including adults, never saw ads

For reference, the PPW Kids edition was $105 Black Friday. Aside from being a better device, you can get it with a black cover.
