I remember a dentist told me when I was young that it doesnt matter what you eat, all food affects your teeth the same way. According to him, after you eat, the sugar in your food eats away at your teeth for a set time, and anything you eat has enough sugar to do the damage. So it doesnt really matter to your teeth if you eat a bucket of m&ms or an apple...assuming it takes the same amount of time to eat both.
I say all this to add, that it doesnt matter what you eat if you are not brushing right away, and I would bet most people dont walk around with a toothbrush at all times.
