I had been researching grinders and this popped up. $20 bucks cheaper than other outlets and Costco's return policy makes it a no brainer for me.

had this for like 10 years. no issues, good one
This is definitely not required. I know someone that's had one for 10+ years with daily use, rarely cleans it, still runs great
Take a spoon and run water over it. Stir the beans with spoon before grinding. Problem solved.

Mine has been going 15+ years and still works good. Significant static mess but no complaints otherwise.

Good enough for espresso? Got a Capresso burr grinder, and not very impressed with espresso

I have this and love it. Paid $100 without a coupon a year or so ago. Highly recommend. Static seems to be a bean-to-bean thing, though nothing major.

You can always spray your beans with a tiny bit of water before pouring them into the hopper to reduce static.

My wife uses this small Hamilton Beach grinder for her coffee for years and has no problem with it. Is this a worthwhile upgrade for her?

Yes, this is a huge upgrade over a blade grinder. You will get a MUCH more consistent grind size, both in terms of session to session, and within a single batch. In turn, your coffee will come out more consistently.

I am a burr grinder novice - currently using a Krups blade grinder for making French Press coffee (the only kind of coffee I make) - and have been looking for a burr grinder deal to make the switch. Two questions:
  1. Is this grinder available in-store as well (normally things a bit cheaper in a Costco store when available both online and in-store)?
  2. How does one specify the amount of coffee to grind? Is that done by the large 1-10 dial?
I highly recommend weighing out your beans and only adding as much as you need per brewing session into the hopper. Don't depend on the timer to put out a consistent weight of grounds, and don't use the hopper to store whole beans.

If you don't want to weigh each time, weigh out a fixed number of scoops and memorize that weight.

I wonder if there are multiple versions of this. Other owners in this thread report owning an all plastic version, while the description states it's metal.

Features:
Heavy-duty Brushed Metal Die-cast Housing, Commercial Grade
Solid Conical Steel Burrs
High Precision Grinders
Holds up to 4 oz. of Ground Coffee
Clearly Marked Fineness Settings

I have the black version, which is plastic. I believe there's also a silver version that's plastic. And then there's this one that has stainless steel housing.

I have owned the plastic silver version for about 6 years now. From what I remember when I first bought is that the metal one dampens the sound a bit better than the plastic one. Mine really isn't that loud though.

The plastic hopper and plastic bin both have acquired a crack but are still going strong. I typically grind medium roast beans which are rarely oily and makes cleaning easier. The timer dial is like a mechanical egg timer. Once turned it will keep running until it hits zero or you can force it to zero if you are done. You can also just slightly turn it to run while you apply pressure.

Conical grinder is the same in all versions. I usually keep the grinds within the 4 "medium" bars for pour overs which are in the 50-75% range. Pretty consistent with slight chips and powder. I can't imagine going into the fine and extra fine ranges which would be good for espresso or Turkish press.

Much better experience with the Baratza Encore. My Capresso stripped an internal plastic gear. When I contacted their support, they stated it was not a replacement part and offered a minimal discount on purchasing a complete unit.

Baratza, on the other hand, makes pretty much every replacement part easily and cheaply purchasable on their website, along with providing instruction guides for repairs and upgrades. And I've owned it longer than I did the Capresso and it's still going strong with no failures.

Doesn't it defeat the purpose of using whole beans if you grind so much at one go? I mean, unless you're making coffee for a regiment
i use about a pound over 2 weeks. works for my schedule to grind it all at once. if i lose some flavor, so be it.

Is this considered better than the oxo burr grinder?
