This matches previous SD from 8 weeks ago, but with benefits of using Costco (returns, warranty).

The M283cdw (club stores) is identical to the M283fdw (retail big boxes) as far as I can tell.

It looks like finally the printer shortage is over, and new models are starting to come out. Some of the newer models are captive to HP's ink service.

Older printer (2020?) with expensive cost-per-print, but I went for it.

Some data points for those interested in this printer:

~$200 for 3rd party replacement toners
~$70 for HP black toner
~$80 for HP color toner each
Expected yield ~1250 pages.

Printer will not print if any of the color or black is out of toner.

HP support forums say both of these are 2020 models, functionally identical, different model numbers for different retailers.

Can anyone with this or the M283fdw comment on whether or not this works with 3rd party toner with the latest firmware update? I'm seeing both yes and no online and would appreciate a first-hand perspective. Thanks!

FYI printer firmware is one of the rare software you shouldn't update, unless it fixes a specific problem you have.

Does anyone know if the version of the firmware that comes on the printer is the older one that supports non-HP toner? Or did they already put a recent version of the firmware on it that requires official (more expensive) HP toner?

The 1-star reviews scared me off, but thx for posting! My very first printer was an HP that lasted almost 20 years, but I don't like the "only HP toner" lockdown. Still on the hunt for a color duplex print/scan.

Did you figure this out? Do you know what firmware it should be on for generic toner support? I'm considering taking a chance and ordering one …
