I honestly left out the details on purpose because it sometimes leads to pointless know-it-all AV banter on here that I can't stand… but since you asked, ultimately, I couldn't get good sound from it despite a lot of effort. The stage was off and just couldn't be dialed in. Compared to my Yamaha rx1900, the center was VERY weak even with raised levels. This made it feel under powered even though it has plenty of power. I went through multiple tests of varied #s of days and even had my wife swap secretly swap between the denon and yamaha and I recognized the difference and felt it was substantially worse every single time. She even swapped it 3 times in one day, determined to throw me off and I still picked up on it immediately both with music and movies each time within minutes. And to be clear, it wasn't just that it was different, it was irritatingly worse. Despite initially believing I was just recognizing the difference she eventually said she could tell there was a lack of clarity with the Denon. We dont put subtitles on often, but had to several times. In summary, the easiest way to put it is to say it sounded cheap. I have another Yamaha in the basement… forget the model #, but it was probably a $400 receiver MSRP and the Denon was certainly better than that, but not by that much. My unit was one of the initial batch with the hdmi bug, so maybe they got better, or maybe I had a lemon. I spent about an hour talking to denon and crutchfield support (they were both really great) and offered a few different things to try, which did change things, but ultimately NOT for the better. This probably isn't too helpful, but there you go.
You didn't say what made you return. Was the unit defective? Didn't do what the manual said it'd do? The audio quality wasn't good? All the reviews available on the internet (here [audiosciencereview.com] is a detailed one) as well as the owners' thread on AVS would disagree with you.

For the record, I don't have one and no first hand experience.
It's not easy to swap multi-channel receivers in a home setting, there are many, many wires and cables to disconnect and reconnect. So when you mentioned your wife swapped them out 3 times in a day, I don't believe you.

Given that Denon and Marantz are owned by the same parent company, they are likely intentionally allowing for differences between the two brands. Accounts for users liking one sound over another. Even the same manufacturer has a different sound signature (I have a Denon 3400 and the previous Denon I had sounded better with my surrounds). Regardless, perhaps this may help several of you:

These look good enough for my daughters ages 8 and 10. Unless you think I should consider something else. Expects look fine for their needs.

Are you aware of the HDMI flaw in this device? Due to that, it did NOT perform the way it was designed. The parts weren't capable, and they didn't catch it in QC.
Directly from your source:

"I've already reported in recent weeks on various issues LG's OLED TVs have had handling the output of Nvidia's RTX 30 graphics cards (despite these TVs being the most advanced gaming TVs on the market). Now it appears that next-gen gaming trouble lies in store, too, for the latest AV receivers from Marantz, Denon and Yamaha."

"The cause of the problems, it's alleged, is a known bug in the Panasonic Solutions HDMI chips the AVRs use (Panasonic Solutions is now under the ownership of Nuvoton Technology). The bug apparently affects the way HDMI 2.1's Fixed Rate Link (FRL) feature works - and unfortunately, early investigations suggest that the problem cannot be fixed by a mere firmware update.

It appears possible, too, that the problem could spread to other next gen game-friendly AVRs on their way from Onkyo, Sony and Pioneer, as these brands have supposedly also bought in the faulty HDMI chip.

UPDATE: I approached Yamaha and Sound United for comment, and while Yamaha has so far only stated that it is looking into it, since I first published this article Sound United has provided a detailed response that includes two confirmed 'workarounds' for the HDMI issue."

To those who have tried both marantz and denon how do you feel is the sound comparison. I know it's subjective but in your opinion does one sound brighter, warmer, clearer, deeper, more surround effects?

Marantz > Denon sound-wise, IMO

Had both in similar price range.

More than workarounds; Sound United as of Aug 2021 has released receivers (including the one here) with an HDMI bug-free chip.

I posted the Stereo United website, but it doesn't appear to come up at the moment. Above is from another site.

I purchased an X4700H recently with the bug-free chip, and it's been working flawlessly with my XSX.

If you don't need pre outs the NR7100 is 1000 right now with dirac. I just installed and wow did it really enhance all of my channels. I didn't even do the full calibration for dirac as it took a while to figure out.
Real slick deal is always in the comments. In for one! Now I can run 5.2.4 with DIRAC correction without blowing $2000. Thanks dude!

"night and day difference?"

Thats BS.

What is a night and day difference is the xt32 and the app vs the lower tier audyssey on the marantz which is unusable

When comparing Marantz and Denon, I refer to the ASR site which provides objective measurements:

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/marantz-sr7015-8k-avr-review.16462/ [Marantz SR7015 Tested]

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/denon-avr-x4700h-2020-avr-review.14188/ [Denon AVR-X4700H Tested]

The Denon measures better, but I'd say either brand sounds comparable. The X4700H I own sounds accurate with movies and music. I also own a Marantz NA6006 to stream from my home server (which humorously, goes thru an analog stage of the Denon) and gotta say I love the sound... of either (or both).

I forgot ASR did a follow-up to the AVR-X4700H since it measured so badly the first time:

No audyssey xt32

Need the denon x3700h to go below 1k
The X3700H only supports 4K/120 + 8K on a single HDMI port. Don't buy the 700 series receivers, they have been replaced by the 800 series like X3800H which support 4K/120 + 8K on all ports.
