FAA rules for drones say it has to be visual line of sight only for recreational flyers. I use a strobe on mine to increase my VLOS out to half a mile in ideal conditions. Otherwise it's a few hundred feet tops before the Mini 2 is impossible to see. And a maximum height of 400 feet above ground level unless other restrictions are in effect.

Be warned, while the drone with battery is under 249 grams, attaching anything else like a strobe will push it over. Then it's FAA registration time.

FAA registration takes 15 minutes and $5. There's also a recreational flyer test for basic drone knowledge that takes another 15 minutes. Slap the number onto the drone and it's legally registered.

The FAA has an app called B4UFLY that is great at checking for any airspace restrictions in your location. It can also set up a notification to other flyers that a drone is flying in the area.

Also needed is LAANC authorization if you use the drone within a 5 mile radius of an airport. The authorization is free and comes through quickly. This is different from DJI's restricted zones. Clicking in DJI Fly does not get LAANC approval.

I have a refurbished Mini 2. It's registered with the FAA. I start up the B4UFLY app, post a notice or get LAANC, fire up the drone, make sure my maximum altitude is correct for the area, fire up the strobe and go fly.

The Mini 2 doesn't have Remote ID like the Mini 3 or 3 Pro. I'm not sure if DJI designed that capability into the Mini 2.

Please don't ruin recreational flying for the rest of us! It's easy enough to be a good drone pilot. And if something happens and your drone crashes and causes damage, doing everything legally is going to go better than having an unregistered drone piloted by a pilot who hasn't taken the time to be familiar with the recreational drone piloting rules.

Lastly, never ever fly over people. Only Part 107 commercial drone pilots with a waiver can do that.

I hope this didn't scare anyone off. These little drones are great fun. That said there's more to it than slapping in a battery and flying off into the wild blue yonder.

If you haven't had one of these before/this is your first one, the Fly More bundle is much more desirable (which is not what this is). The extra batteries and the external charger make life so much easier than having a single battery, and having to charge it in the drone. I am keeping an eye out for a Fly More bundle, refurbished or not.

Mini 2 SE is capped at 2.7K instead of Mini 2 at 4K.

For $20 more at Costco you get 4K, extra battery, case, and memory card.

Tempted to jump on this compared to the refurbs, but hoping there's a decent sale coming up with the new release in March

What new release are you expecting in March?

I just ordered one in costsco. Is the Mini 2 SE better than Mini 2 ? I am not really worried about the extras.

Curious... I have an original Mavic Pro... Wonder how this compares and if it's worth the upgrade/downgrade (cost difference is nuts - these are so much cheaper vs when I purchased my OG Mavic Pro).

Any recommendations for a first drone purchase? What's the range and battery time of these things? And can they be viewed on your phone in real time?

I guess I will stick with Mini 2 from Costco.

What's the price difference vs buying extra batteries etc?

This is a good first drone for beginners. Straightforward setup and easy to use. Flight time is about 25 mins per battery - good thing they have you two batteries. Connects to cell phone to see live footage of your drone in flight. Jump in if you are eyeing drone purchase for a while.

DJI states the MINI 2 has a maximum range of 10 km (6.2 Miles). That is in areas with no interference and no obstacles. Realistically I usually get 1 to 2 miles in my suburban community.
