I've had my eye on the pin nailer for a minute and it came up hackable this weekend.

(Hack: Walk in, buy the two, walk back in, return battery. Receipt is itemized with a $50 maximum return value for the battery, which effectively becomes a discount on the tool.)

Nice one. I may pick up another tool there that doesn't go on sale or hack frequently.

Got the pin nailer with battery kit (1.5 ah) for $179 in December from HD. Not sure if it will get down to that price again, but keep a look out for next big sale.

It's a very cool tool and functions well but a pin nailer isn't super useful. I do have it along with the 15, 16, and 18 gauge nailers. I also have the crown stapler and regular stapler. This doesn't get used a lot and is mostly useful for glue ups.

For me, the main use is fine mounding, like crown and trim on kitchen cabinets, trim on built ins, etc. where you need small holes. I just wish this shot 2" nails Frown

Not a killer deal but a reasonable price if you're in a rush. The best deal I saw was last December 2022, $179 with a 1.5Ah battery and charger, and I quickly snagged one! 🥳

The pins have almost no holding power, anything that requires holding power (arguably anything that you can hit with ground traffic) should probably use 18-gauge. For crown shouldn't the nails be shot into a backer board or into the studs? These pins wouldn't be that long.

Besides the lack of a need to finish a pin nail, why this over 18-gauge for those applications?

It would depend on type of wood you would work with as well. Oak to oak or similar hardwoods this holds in pretty good. In my case retrofitting stairs for example I use adhesive to hold steps together and this provides temporary hold power without making much holes that would be very visible even with 18GA. Similar situations with kitchen cabinets trim work or places where I would use adhesive for hold and the 23GA to hold in place until that sets in.
