I actually happen to be using Polk (but I wouldn't call the LSiM tier "cheap") in both my home theater and livingroom setup. Then again, everything is relative and I'm sure somebody will say, "yeah, but they're not (insert $10K speakers here)". Nothing else changed in my setups (either one of them) when I went from a Pioneer Elite SC-95 (MCACC) to my LX505 (DIRAC) and I wouldn't say anything about the change in my sound was "significant". And in the case of the person asking, he could comfortably get in with a sub-$500 receiver that would do everything he NEEDS it to do. Not sure paying an extra $800 or so to get DIRAC is worth it. To each their own, but if he's asking if this model is overkill, he's probably cost-conscious in this particular situation. My getting DIRAC with my receiver? Perhaps a bonus as I got the model I did because I'm somewhat of a Pioneer loyalist and it checked all of my needs 1) newer HDMI board capable of speeds to allow VRR 2) front pre-outs 3) 7 channels + atmos capable. But I PERSONALLY wouldn't have paid an insane premium just to get it. In his/her case, they would be paying a notable premium because they didn't really want/need any of the other "hardware benefits" (channels/pre-outs/perhaps higher power).

Only reason to get this in a 3 channel setup is if you have a very challenging room and need Dirac rather than multeq xt or ypao. I have tried all 3 including this unit and Dirac is by far the best. But I have a room with a lot of glass and odd room cut outs and things.

If not, you're better off with a cheaper 5 or 7 channel unit and external amps for the same cost.

provided it is in your budget then no. while this is more geared towards home theater use (5,7,11 channel etc.) it can certainly be used for 2 or 3 channel use. the big advantage would be the use of Dirac which will be most beneficial if you have a room that has some difficult acoustical properties. I have used all the major room correction software systems and Dirac really does a much better job than Audyssey or YPAO.

Yes. If you don't need DIRAC (let's be honest, nobody NEEDS it) or pre-outs to run a dedicated amp/amps, you should be able to get down to about a $400 or $500 5.1 receiver.

Just noticed no Firmware update since 10/14/2021 and according to the doc it uses the same firmware as a TX-NR7100. That's surprising.

I don't disagree with anything you said, but when I was searching for my new HT receiver, I ended up getting the sister receiver to this (Pioneer LX505). It was one of very few that checked all of the boxes I had -- latest HDMI specs / pre-outs / at least 7.1.2.

Pre-outs seemed to be the hardest thing to find sub-$1000.

Not saying there isn't one, but can you recommend a sub-$1000 5 or 7 channel receiver with pre-outs?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but doesn't this have a full set of pre-outs? If so, doesn't that do what you're wanting?

It will turn off the internal amp very quickly if you stress it.

Yes, it does have pre-outs. But the better quality AV Receivers have the ability to disable the internal amp, to reduce power consumption and heat

If Onkyo/Integra produced this same unit, minus the internal amp, it would sell very well. The low end amps most of these Mid to Low priced AVR's have, leave a lot to be desired. This unit is no exception.

If you go to the new listing instead of the refurb listing, the latest firmware release shows 09/09/2022.

Only true if you are using cheap speakers like polk or similar.
Otherwise Dirac makes a significant difference!

You might want to take a look at Denon's 3700. It has a preamp mode that will do that. It makes a pretty good PrePro for much cheaper.

If you add the Editor app to XT32 you get the main benefits of Dirac.
I've used pretty much all RC's, the app makes the difference nominal in many cases.
Keep in mind your room environment, speakers and there placement plays a significant role on how big or small the difference is.

The 3700 has 2 independent sub outs and will optimize them, this only has one(no bass management).

Denon/Amazon has for $1199 brand new right now. If you don't need it now, should drop more since the 3800 is out now.
