Dell refurbished is old. This i3 cpu is faster than those 8th gen i7 cpu. This has an empty slot that can add at least one 8g ram. I think you can add up to 32g.

You obviously don't know how fast these i3 12th gen processors are...they would smoke those old used/refurbished i7s without a sweat

To buy or not to buy? Seeing a bunch of price drops on laptops lately!
I just ordered it. It's very similar to the IdeaPad 5 I'm used to so I'm giving it a go. The ideapad 5 is double the price so I'm going to use this as a toss laptop.

Got one, 2 hours delivery, cool.
Also got an 8gb stick from amazon for $15. Pretty easy to throw in there (snapping off of the shell after screws out was a little annoying). 12th gen intel, 512GB NVME, and16gb ddr 3200 for $315, can't beat that. Screen is TN but gets pretty bright so actually looks decent straight-on (unlike those $100 chromebook TN screens).

Can you link the Amazon ram you purchased? Thanks

Weird, under highlights on page it says "15.6 FHD (1920x1080) TN 250nits Anti-glare"
under details, specifications it says "Display Type: IPS Panel"

Hoping you have some more to say after you use it a bit.
The reviews online are almost worthless.

If you go by this, the model does have an option for an IPS display at 300 nits. But I rather doubt that is what this OP product has at this price point.

yeah longer costco warranty is nice. They thought about getting extended warranty through lenovo. Too bad they didn't! On theirs it gets windows started yup, I think, but then it shuts back down. They were told it was a bad ssd. Then they replaced the ssd and said it still happened. Maybe the best buy people are just dumb and someone else could fix it.
Most credit cards extend manufacturers warranty an additional year

Got the last one at my local Target! Seems super light! Screen is decent(coming from an ips laptop) for the money! Keyboard, touchpad, and fingerprint reader work great! For $300, I can see this lasting me for at least the next five years(was using a 5th gen I5 for the past 7 years which still works, but getting slower).

I've had this in my cart a few times and I just haven't been able to pull the trigger.
I don't know much about computers other than what I've read here over the years and I trust the opinions here.
I got my current (Acer) laptop from a Slickdeal here like 9? years ago on blind faith in the knowledge base here. And that turned out well. Thank you all.
It still works fine. The graphics colors/screen have always been awful. It's a bit slow opening a few common apps. but fine once open. I don't run any high-tech apps. or games. It really does everything that I need it to. It's just blah.
I keep bailing out on buying the deal in this thread because I really don't know if it will make a big enough difference to my world to be worth spending the $.
I feel like I really don't have a legitimate need for a "better" computer. But I'm still tempted to grab this deal.
Help a non-geek decide?

Here's the spec's for the Acer I'm running now:
https://www.acer.com/us-en/suppor...uctdetails

p.s. I can't remember the last time this laptop left my desk. I rarely take it anywhere. It sits here and is connected to another monitor so I can have 2 screens.
Maybe I should be looking for a desktop computer and another monitor instead of a laptop? But it would still be nice to have the option to have a mobile laptop if I ever do need to go somewhere with it. The battery in my current/old laptop probably won't last an hour.

Your current acer laptop is ancient compared to this one. You would enjoy this one as it is much faster than what you are currently using.

I should get mine tomorrow. I also bought the one at Staples when it was on sale. I want to compare both side by side and see which one is best. The TN screen at 250 nits should be sufficient for normal use. Some TN panels have better colors than others.

I agree with Shogun749. This Lenovo ideapad 3i is better than the Acer Aspire A315-21 that you provided the link for.

The #1 reason to upgrade is the performance; I'll cover that in a minute. #2 reason to upgrade is the display. The Acer has 1366x768 resolution on a 15.6" display.. that is not as sharp as the 1080p (1920x1080) resolution on the ideapad 3i. Your eyes will thank you for the improved display! Lenovo's laptop also has 2GB more RAM (8GB, compared to 6GB in your Acer). Your laptop also has a slow SATA hard drive... this Lenovo (and most laptops these days.. nearly all) has an SSD (solid state drive) which will load Windows and applications much faster than the hard drive in your laptop. The Lenovo also has a fingerprint reader for quick login, which is something your laptop also lacks. Lenovo also has a USB-C port, which is a newer connectivity option that is certainly a plus to have. Your laptop is also almost a pound heavier.. 4.63lb compared to 3.74lb for the Lenovo.

Now, regarding performance/speed. The Lenovo is way faster than your Acer. Check this link [gadgetversus.com] for more info. I placed both CPUs into the comparison engine at gadgetversus.com and the Lenovo is from ~173% to 756%+ faster than the Acer. It is quite stunning.

The only negative point I can see is that your Acer has a 1TB hard drive, which is twice as much storage as the 512GB SSD in the Lenovo. But the hard drive in your Acer is so slow that I think it's worth the tradeoff to just get the Lenovo. In every other respect, the Lenovo is better. I think you'd be quite happy with it. Let us know what you decide!

I decided to get one of these. Thank you OP, and those that have answered my questions.
I got my last computer through one of these Slickdeals @ 9 years ago and I seem to remember a discussion group that talked about how to optimize it. (changing settings, turning off startup stuff, etc.).
Would that have been right here in the OP or do those discussions happen elsewhere on the site?

I'm excited to hear it! Please share your experience here when you receive the new laptop.. I (and others, I am sure) would be interested in learning what you think of it, especially compared to your Acer laptop.

If you have general questions on how to optimize a laptop, you would likely be able to find answers on that anywhere on the internet, so you could just type your questions in a search engine like Google, Bing, etc. and find sites that answer those questions. If you'd like to check with the folks who may have also purchased this laptop from the slick deal, you may find it helpful to post your questions here, to see if others have comments to share regarding the specific laptop. But I'm not sure if folks will be reading this thread 1-2 weeks from now, so you may have to direct message folks via slickdeals, or reply to one of their posts earlier in this thread to make sure slickdeals notifies them of the mention/your message, that way they see it and will read your post or message & be able to respond. Smilie

I have bookmarked/am watching this thread so I will see your posts! Wink
