Used to be a big kindle fan, unfortunately Amazon is not being very supportive and expect them to cut back on development and software updates.

I get a lot of use with my 8+ on a charger stand. Good with some TV apps and helps run my Alexa setup.

Some value? Can get $5 and 20% trade in discount on new scribe if you get the 2015 kindle for $20.

Picked up a Fire HD 8 2018 last time around. It is slow. So slow in fact, that it can barely play Youtube videos at 1080p (although the screen really only really needs 720p, topping out at 800 pixels). I don't really see this useful for anything but niche projects where you're repurposing the tablet.
Plays pbs kids just fine on WiFi and downloaded for airplane mode.

This is where they excel

The fire tablets make great picture frames.

Put them in show mode, point them at an album in amazon photos, and go. Then get the amazon photos uploader to upload photos to that amazon album and you have a dynamic picture frame for less.

You do have to turn off all that other amazon stuff, but for the price you can't beat it. Also remember amazon photos is unlimited with prime, so you can drop your whole library in there.

Happen to remember what firmware it shipped with? Thinking about doing the old Firetoolbox on it and I really don't want to buy one if it isn't capable of being fully functional.

Yes! It's slow as dog. I have one that I use occasionally as a security monitor and little more. It is slow even for that purpose. Would not recommend this for any one honestly even at $20 not worth it.

Yes, these are slow. Mine also won't take a charge now so it's useless.

If you are looking for an e-reader, I love my Kobo Clara HD. I know the new Paperwhite is "better". I can sideload my epub books just drag and drop, and best of all - no ads.

If your looking for a Paperwhite check out the Kobos so you won't be locked down as much to Amazon services

I got a refurb in box Clara HD for around 50 on eBay, looked brand new in the box, plastic on screen.

I know Amazon won't give you 25$ trade in, but day to day use? if you actually read books? I like the Kobo better
