I've been putting off buying a water filtration system because I haven't had time to research them to figure out the best kind and brand. Can anyone who has researched them provide advice on reliable sources or any input on good brands and types to look for?

Speaking of water filtration systems, I just got my results back from the free home depot water test and they offered me a $50 gift card to come to my house "further test" my water! According to reddit (must be reliable, NYT quotes it), even if you send distilled water they will say your water is hard.

Wow so many. How do I know which one is good or which one should I get. The cheapest will work fine?

Post indicates this is a one day sale but when I follow the link, the sale is thru March 31st. The Price off is so so as it's not a discount that would make me pull the trigger unless I needed one right here, right now. Cool for the awareness

We actually had a guy from Home Depot come out with his water test kit and he said you have absolutely perfect water. It was at this point that I told him I installed a softener myself. All I have is a pre 20 micron sand filter - 5600 softener with a 10 micron post filter and nothing more. He said the only detectable item in my water was trace chlorine. I need an RO now for point of use and a UV for the whole house. We're in Montgomery County, TX in a private mud district on a local well.

Depends on the how hard your water is. There's a water test to determine that

I spent quite a few hours. Personal opinion is proone for gravity and they have a great inline kit as well, but it's fairly pricey. Their gravity is excellent however and they release their lab results.

iSpring is popular but I found they lied and got sued by federal trade commission for lying on where their filters came from (claimed USA and in actuality was China) so that deterred me from using them. they also don't seem to release any lab results on what their water filters remove that I could find. IMHO that should be easily found on Depot, Lowes or even their direct website which is 123filter... and I couldn't seem to find it.

I went with express water from Depot and their three stage heavy metal one. Ran about 500 and then I'm using a $55 200 micron spin down prefilter ahead of it and am on a well.

Express water outright says their filters are made in Taiwan and they release their lab they use and the corresponding lab results. Transparency is something I prefer and Taiwan is not China, so I was good with that. If you're not then go with proone for the home system as well. I'll be grabbing a proone at our next house but we use their gravity filters for drinking water so the house system is a redundant system for us.

Best of luck.

Depends on your individual water source and what you're looking for. Someone on a private well near farmland will have vastly different needs than someone just trying to further filter municipal water.

Do you need to reduce chlorine? Total dissolved solids? Heavy metals? Agricultural run-off? Sediment? Usually you'll be filtering for some combination of those things. And do you need point of use filtering or whole house? You also have to consider maintenance cost of replacing filters and if they're readily available. From what I've seen, AQUASURE gets decent reviews but the replacement filters can be hit or miss on whether they're available locally after about a year, and some of them get fairly expensive because of how often they get replaced.

Depending on your budget/needs, you might look at Springwell or EvoWater systems for whole house filtration.

Can you be more specific with details about the system you built? I know very little about water filtration, and almost nothing about softening. What do you mean when you say "pre 20 micron sand filter," and "5600 softener with a 10 micron post filter?" I more or less comprehend everything else. Thank you.

Honestly your first move should be to analyze your water. Then based upon what you have and your source, you need to build a system to remove based upon what contaminates you need to remove or minerals you want to add. Some want to remove chlorides but leave minerals. Some want to keep the chlorides and soften the water. You also need to keep in mind your required flow rates as each filtration step or softener will reduce flow rates. Again, your first step is a full water analysis to see what you're working with. Then a lot of online research. Or go to a water filtration company and have them do it all for you at a higher cost.

it is actually very easy to tell if your water is hard or not, don't even need a test.

1. look up the water quality report from your water company. it will say hardness, your water will only be above that number no less, anything above 3gpg means it is a little hard (it is your choice to have a water softener or not) above 7gpg means your water is HARD better get a water softener.

2. Do you have hard water stains on faucets etc pretty fast after each cleaning? if yes then you got hard water. ex like my Kettle got water stain after 2 weeks of regular use, then I know my water is super hard (it is 12gpg on water report)

I had someone come out to discuss installing a system, and they told me that I couldn't have one installed without spending a lot of money. They said it could only be installed at the place where the water main from the street connects to the house, and something bc of where this was located it made it extremely difficult to do this.

Does anyone with more experience in this area know if this is correct? Or were they trying to get me to spend more money? I seem to remember water the softener we had when I was a kid was installed in the middle of our basement, which didn't seem to be where the water main connected to the house. I live in FL and the water is insanely bad - so any kind of system would be a life saver.
