I have multiple pairs of base layers from multiple companies bought at different price points.

The most common pair I have were the "best recommended for overall value" are the rei mid weight base layer that I bought on clearance as the new model was being switched over. (Regular price $50 bought for around $20)

I also bought a pair of the smartwool intraknit 200 merino base layer ($125 retail paid $60)

The smart wool are by far the nicest, they would also be too warm for the winter we had across most of the country, outside of skiing or a similar activity.

I probably wouldn't buy 5-6 pairs but having 1-2 "nice sets" for really cold weather or activities at the right price.

I'm a truck driver who doesn't really like cold anymore after spending too many winters sitting in the woods growing up.

There are different weights and materials for different uses.

After having some experience with them vs other options I would buy them again but not at full price. I would have a hard time spending as much on thermals as a pair of lululemon commission pants (which I consider a good clothing investment)

I would also like to add a nice merino base layer top to my arsenal of cold weather gear.

My "every day" thermal top is a Terramar I bought on clearance at Als.com for around $10 that I really really like.

If you are referring to smartwool specifically, their merino wool base layers are amazing for outdoor activities such as backpacking and camping. I no longer need to pack multiple base layers because these are breathable, doesn't trap odors, and doesn't retain moisture. Socks especially

If you want merino 150 stuff (all weather, lighter. 250 is their heaviest) then smartwool.com has some items on discount. $51 for men's plant dyed 81% merino 150 weight baselayer (originally $85). I found discount code "wool15" that takes an extra 15% off.

I want to buy some of this 250 heavier stuff but I ordered some 150 stuff from smartwool dot com last night. Hoping to get it and try it on for fit before I invest more.
